It? 1 APPOINTMENT OF JUDGE WOODS | This is Very Gratifying to the People L of This County, Especially _ Members of the Bar. ^ President Wilson, last week, sent to the Senate, the nomination of Charles A.Woods, of Marion, S C , as the successor to Nathan Golf, n Judge of the Fourth United States U circuit court. He is at the presen t ..... tune associate justice of the supreme ' court of South Carolina. Recently he was endorsed by nearly every bar in the State for the position on the Federal bench, for which ha has now been nominated by the pre&i- c dent. This appointment will bi especially pleasing to the people of this section of the State, though the lawyers of the entire State will bt sure to miss him on the bench of the 11 Supreme Court of South Carolina. No more competent man could have IV been chosen by President Wilson ' for tbis place, ci w The Neglected Spring. An interesting bit of information t] in relation to a family sick wiih ty- c phoid fever came out some time ago. . The oQtire family was atfected. They 1 lived at a good location in tho couu- ?? trv and the ohviseian in trvinc to a j r / " ? - ? "" i liud the source of the typhoid germs was puzzled. After much question- ^ i iug he found that the family in go i ing to a picnic had stopped along the way at a spring from whicn they all drana. Taking some of the v. water from this spring he fouud it t alive with the fever germs, a id thus , the illnosss of these people was ex, plained. The above story has been C related and we suppose it is true, though w e cannot giye names here, r? Anyway it serves our purpose in *advising our readers that by no ; means should they ever drink any '? , water from a neglected spring or c r well, for while the germs of typhoid may be found in a well anywhere t ? still the fact remains that these S germs are rnoro apt to bo fouud in g the well or spring that has boon nog k ieeted and unprotected from contain g ination. Any fami.'y by exercising care in the location aad keeping oi . the water supply may bo sure that . their chances of catching disease 1 from it will be very small. Tncse j who drink from all sorts of places . whenever their thirst demauds, will 1 , much sooner run up against a case } of illness. Common sense ought to c be sufficient at any time to warn ( one who is about to drink from a j neglected well or spring. Every- r oody should be careiul what they r eat or drink. With many people t thero is an aversion to eating or drinking anything \ h ise suuice 1 is uucertain or unknown. This is c I I 1 ! - ? ' r a fcjuyu quality aua uas saved many 3 r a man or woman's life. But there t L are others who pay no attention to t a nothing except the appetite. If h they crave it and it is there, the 3 next thing is to take it regardless of consequences. What we would 1 L, like to heip do is to educate the peo 1 pie so that they will understand how I to take care of themselves, and they c they can live longer and accomplish c more while Jiyiug. ' c ) Deafness Cannot Be Cured v t by local applications, as they cannot ( reach the diseased portion of the ear. , There is only one way to cure deaf- 1 i ness, and that is by constitutional t remedies Deafness is caused by an . inflamed condition of the mucous r lining of the Eustachian Tube. a When this tube is lLllamed yc u have, ' B j rumbling sound or imperfect hear- r a. ing, and when it is entirely closed, 3 Deafness is the result and unless the a } inflammation can b1. taken out and c 3 this tube restored to its normal con< dition, hearing wiil bo destroyed for . ever; nine cases out of ten are caus- 1 s ed by Catarrh, which is nothing but l: \ an inflamed condition of the mucous . surfaces. Keep out the Flies The season of the year is here when the house tly is due to come forth in swarms from his breeding places of filth. In years gone by the lly was not so well understood, lie was hated then as he is now, but there was little known of his man ner of breeding, ar.d ho was not suspected of carrying about with him the countless germs of disease now charged against him. The truth is, that when they are allowed to infest the dwelling house, they pass constantly in and out, going directly from ibo cow-lot to the dining table and other things closely connected with the lives of the dwellers in the house, and at each trip they carry a certain amount of tilth from the out side to the inside. Often have you noticed whole families prostrated with dysentery and similar complaints No one could teli how it a 1 came about. The house flies were no doubt responsible, as they may have brought in at one time enough germs from a filth pile to matte a whole army ill. The only ihing W do is to keep the flies out. Of course there are otter precautions that one may take, such as keeping the pre mises clean all through the Winter and alljwing no place where they may breed. Bub you cannot make everybody do Ibis. You may keep your own homo ever s > clean, ai d your dwelling lot may be sanitary in every respect. Your next door neighbor may not. follow your example, and you will have to put up with things next door that are re pulsivo to you in the extreme. So then the only thing to do is to]] put, up good screens on all the doors and windows, and wago eU rn d war on the few flies that will succeed in passing these brrriers, going over the house at least twice a day and killing the last of the pests. Keep the food covi red or inclosed so that you are 3ure that a fly has not walked over anything that you eat. Make it so that you will know that ho has nit been there, for ho leaves no sign, not even tracks that are visible to the naked eye, but whore he goes the filth and the germs aro there. Keep him out from now on, no matter what the cost. Put up the screens even if you have to go in debt for them and pay for them in instalments. A serious illness, such | as flies may cause you, will no doubt take all that yon have in this world in tho way of proporty, if not your life. Make the. dwelling and the lot and out-buildings as sanitary as yov possibly can. J)on't let it i/>*ow u\ in weeds and run over with garbagt just because your neighbor doc this way with his. Then put up t.h< screens without delay, The flie: will knock arounu the doors and wii dows and will want to got in ver; bad, and it will be a pleasure to yoi to know that at last you have head cdThoua otT. Conway is a w( 11 drained town not withstanding the fact that it has no public waterworks and sewerage system. About ten or fifteen years ago, one or two citizens who erected now dwellings at that time, put in waterworks plants of their own. Since that time nearly all now dwell ings, of any size have been provided with works and sewerage, and while this improvement has been going on in relation to tho new hom?s of lac people, many of tho older dwellings have been j ined in, until now it is almost tho same in respect to sanitation as if tho town had a public, waterworks and sewerage system. in the year 1!)09, property owners 1 iv i.g on and near 5th Avenue in the principal residence portion ol iho town made a contract between themselvos to put in a sewer line which would empty into the lake at the foot ol this Avenue For somr reason it was later decided to run the sewer into Waccamaw Uivor and the course of it was changed so that it ran down Laurel street to the J K. Nicholas corner, thenco to Main street and down this to the railroad yards, thence into the river near the wharves. To this sewer and the various additions that have been made to it, many of the residences in the upper part of tho town have connected, Just now a new lino of sewer is being put in to empty in the !a\e ai the mouth of Deep Gully Branch. It is hoing put in by Messrs J. A. Me Dermoit. o T. Sessions, Dr. 11. LI. Burroughs, YV. L. Bryan, and perhaps otners. It is said that a short line will be added to this one taking tn the large and handsome residence of J08. YV llolliduy. Aside from what has b(ea dc n i as above related, the town is woll drained naturally. During the past the town authorities have done much toward helping this natural drain ago-by putting in tiling at various low places, and making box drains at others. With exception of onoor two low basins iu the outlying sec lions of the city, Die town is pretty well drained considering the faci that it has no public sow or system and water supply. ?- 9 The Magistrate's Court.
