It tvas reported recently that a ^ * * ? ieoparu bad beeh naught in this County and that the hide had boon shown or offered for sale at Muffins We hardly know. There are always a plenty of fish stories, as well as others, to while away the dull season of Spring, * * * Many people are ready to lind a verdict of guilty against any person who happens to be charged with a crime, without waiting for any investigation or proof of any kind that the crime has been committed, i This failing of the common run of mankind is unfortunate for anybody who happens to be under the ban of some charge, because one man's op'nion, though not based on facts, will pass on to another for what it is not, and be tikeu as absolute fact by the next man and the next. * * * * A news item in the Florence Daily 'p;.? ? - fyvau-iu u recent issue of that admirable little paper, it was stated that a gentlemau visiting Florence from Horry County, had stated that the people of this county had caught on to the parcel post with a will; and that the postman passed by that man's house eyery day to stnoth ered with packages for purchasers from foreign mail order houses that he could not bo seen, and they weie even tied to,the shafts of the buggy. Florence mak^s a bid in the same a tide for this mail order business which the Tones says is yery evidently going out of the State. We have 1:0 idea who the informant t f the Times could havo been, but v e are certain that he has stretched the situation a whole lot, and it would be well to allow for the ''crawl "I We know of none who would be so foolish as to go to Florence for thing? that could not be obtained in Conway, for we have often heard of t.hc two places, Florence and Conway, being compared together as places where everything wanted by the people were carried in stock by the xerchants, and the decision has always been in favor of Conway. It has often been said that you could buy things here thct you would not find for sale in many towns of two or three times Conway's size. The merchants cf Conway rnako every effort to supply tho surrounding country with all that it needs, and as long as they do this, there is certainly no necessity for going to Flor enco or any other distant place. * t. * * In the current issue of Farm and Fireside appears the folio ving: "The cai ker-worm has long been known as one of the most destructive c r^hard insects. It Often mint the leaver of apple trees by feeding upon the green surfaces. The your.g worms hatch in spring from e;.gs l laid upon the bark of tho twigs, I branches or trunk. They are green & or brown, striped with darker lines. "fortunately these canker-worms arc readly poisoned by spraying and cause no damage in orchards that are strayed " i THE POTATO CROP S Jh-'SJr.-. 1 /ttFZZJ7~7f=ii\ The success which Burroughs Colli MR nnmiiinv hfid with ii?i?h no tatoes last year, as a money crop, demonstrates tho fact that it is a crop which may bo grown by the farmers with profitable results, as well as the older dependence of colton, strawberries and tobacco. The facis concerning the iridi potato crop of 11U2 have boon published in this paper more than oncc. Last week there was a news item relating the fact that the s-naller farmers liv iug near Conway had gone into the Industry this year, under contracts with Mr. George A. Dorniu, and that in this way more than an acreage of three, hundred acres had been planted, and that those were up now and looking well. 11 was also stated that bhou'd the crop turn out as well as the crop last year, and tho pi ices on the markets prove as good, that the present crop would turn out at least thirty thousand dollars among the farmers of this vicinity. We * ? v*: \ m ill ? ? /* 4 * ? * I- - - - 1 * ui u v> Aiiiu^ ii t nun lU 1111S lDALlGl' once editorially, for we think that ii ia important that every farmer in the county should know of these facts, aud having this knowledge be enabled to increase his income by using still another money crop, one that will come c 11 the laud in time for him to plant corn in the same dirt and make two crops in one year. That the soils of the county are suit able to this cr< p is abundantly proved by the success of the planters last year, and it is not only proved by this, but it is proved by the small gruden patche s which the farmers of the county Lave been planting for their own uses frcm year to year for a long time. We have yet to hear of any farmer in this county who failed to raise an abundant crop of irish p itatoes for his own table provided ho planted them in time and fertilized and cultivated them well. And this applies to almost all sections of the county. So that the widespread demand for iri-h potatoes all over the world may be just as well supplied from t his section of South Carolina as from other sections of the country, where they are /?^ ,, t 1 . - .. .. ! *1 1 uuu o't virtsiiy nviseu. as stated last I vcok t he crops thio year are all up and looking very line, So far the outlook for u line yield is good There is no reason in the world why the prices should not be as good or better than ever b fore. We believe that the farmers will succeed with the small crops to many of them are raising this year, and that their sue cess will result in a g-enter acreage next year, and the acreage will go on increasing from year to year, until Conway will be known us a great shipping point for Irish potatoes Then tic farmers will no doubt be able to sell th : ir product right a> Conway, for the buyers will come from the markets to got the crop and not wait for the potatoes to be shipped to them.
