The country around Sanford, S C , will be considerably improved on .Juno Ut, 1913, when t' c three rural f-ee delivery routes, which have already been provided for, and which wiil become effective on that date, are put into operation, supplying daily mail to the farmers of that section of the county. Congressman U-jgsdale has not been idle in these matters since he went into office. A recent letter to him from the depart mi nt stated as follows: "Referring to your personal call at the Department on the 18lh instant, relative to the three rural routes from Sanford, South Carolina, the establishment of which has been authoi :z-:d, effective June 2, 1913, 1 beg to inclose carbon copies of the d( scriplions of these routes which show the loads proposed to be serv cd." After much question- ^ i iug he found that the family in go i ing to a picnic had stopped along the way at a spring from whicn they all drana. Taking some of the v. water from this spring he fouud it t alive with the fever germs, a id thus , the illnosss of these people was ex, plained. The above story has been C related and we suppose it is true, though w e cannot giye names here, r? Anyway it serves our purpose in *advising our readers that by no ; means should they ever drink any '? , water from a neglected spring or c r well, for while the germs of typhoid may be found in a well anywhere t ? still the fact remains that these S germs are rnoro apt to bo fouud in g the well or spring that has boon nog k ieeted and unprotected from contain g ination. The case involves i charge of trespass on lands of the prosecutor, Ur.der across indictmei.i last year the prosecutor Todd | was tried for the same offense by the defendant in the present case for trespass on tho identical land, and the jury found a verdict of guilty. Keep out the Flies The season of the year is here when the house tly is due to come forth in swarms from his breeding places of filth. In years gone by the lly was not so well understood, lie was hated then as he is now, but there was little known of his man ner of breeding, ar.d ho was not suspected of carrying about with him the countless germs of disease now charged against him. The truth is, that when they are allowed to infest the dwelling house, they pass constantly in and out, going directly from ibo cow-lot to the dining table and other things closely connected with the lives of the dwellers in the house, and at each trip they carry a certain amount of tilth from the out side to the inside. Often have you noticed whole families prostrated with dysentery and similar complaints No one could teli how it a 1 came about. The house flies were no doubt responsible, as they may have brought in at one time enough germs from a filth pile to matte a whole army ill. The only ihing W do is to keep the flies out. A serious illness, such | as flies may cause you, will no doubt take all that yon have in this world in tho way of proporty, if not your life. Conway is a w( 11 drained town not withstanding the fact that it has no public waterworks and sewerage system. About ten or fifteen years ago, one or two citizens who erected now dwellings at that time, put in waterworks plants of their own. Since that time nearly all now dwell ings, of any size have been provided with works and sewerage, and while this improvement has been going on in relation to tho new hom?s of lac people, many of tho older dwellings have been j ined in, until now it is almost tho same in respect to sanitation as if tho town had a public, waterworks and sewerage system. in the year 1!)09, property owners 1 iv i.g on and near 5th Avenue in the principal residence portion ol iho town made a contract between themselvos to put in a sewer line which would empty into the lake at the foot ol this Avenue For somr reason it was later decided to run the sewer into Waccamaw Uivor and the course of it was changed so that it ran down Laurel street to the J K. Nicholas corner, thenco to Main street and down this to the railroad yards, thence into the river near the wharves. To this sewer and the various additions that have been made to it, many of the residences in the upper part of tho town have connected, Just now a new lino of sewer is being put in to empty in the !a\e ai the mouth of Deep Gully Branch. It is hoing put in by Messrs J. A. Me Dermoit. o T. Sessions, Dr. 11. LI. Burroughs, YV. L. Bryan, and perhaps otners. It is said that a short line will be added to this one taking tn the large and handsome residence of J08. YV llolliduy. Aside from what has b(ea dc n i as above related, the town is woll drained naturally. During the past the town authorities have done much toward helping this natural drain ago-by putting in tiling at various low places, and making box drains at others.
