WODWARD; Editor THURSDAY, APRIL, 24 . 1913 The Herald will ask each of its subscribers to help it make for them all that could be wanted as a county paper, one that will carry tho news each week without fear or favor. * * * The faculty posessed by some men of working every day and thinking as, they work, of some plan or process, whoreby the work may be short eued and the labor made easier, has led in tho past to many inventions by which the world has profited greatly. * * * The question of the simian ances try of man has long been the subject of jest. From tho zoological point of view it has been a matter of more NnrinilB nnn/i.i?? - ... .wuu wwuuvi u as mr us 100 position of mail in any scheme of classification is involved. With the ad- ' vent of modern methods of study applied to blood aud the problems of immunity, data of a new sort have ' beed.furnished to bear on tho real ' relationship of man to some of his ' animal competitors. To this evi- ' dence of blood relationship have ' now been added fresh facts derived 1 from the study of nutrition. The 1 lon^-known contrast between man 1 and the animals, according to The ' Journal of the American Medical ' Association, is thus made less strik- 4 iug by the discovery of those inter- c mediate species exhibiting human f characteristics in more than one 1 way. The gap has been bridged by 1 the studies on the anthropoid apes 1 which have now furnished to science 1 the reputable evideuce for that re- * 1_:? n?iauuauip wuicn the behavior of L apes in vaudeville and elsewhere 1 has strongly suggested. ^ K c * * J * o It is only about twenty-tivo years L si ace Congress passed the Hatch act v founding the system of agricultural (J experiment stations in this country. v The annual federal grant to oach t, state is now $80 000, to which the u states themselves have in many a cases added. Those less familiar a with the work often think of it sole- t( ly as an attempt to further the in- p terests of the practical farmer. The (I institutions were founded "to pro- ^ rn^te scientific investigation and r] experiment respecting the prinei- S( plos and applications of agricultural fL science"; but the scope of the work al now extends far beyond the bound- r I J. aries of the farm. The lessons of ^ this imposing movement in agricul- m tural research and educatiou are ^ manifold. The American experi- u ment stations have demonstrated tc the solidarity of the different scien w cos. Their successes have taught pi the important lesson that no one m can foretell what beneficial results re may deyelop from highly specialized rc researches, and they have fostered a spirit of popular interest in the pr progress oi science quite beyond any y0( thing that could have been expected bei two decides ago, when empiricism ? (>till reigned supreme and distrust of the utility of scientific investiga- ? tio^i was widespread. As an iRut1 ratiou the vali"? tnis work, bat T Journal of the American Medi- ?'n\ i' * -- - ?OJ( %><4? Association comments on the recent report of the Wisconsin Agri ^ cultural Experiment Station, which \] wu has forty or more problems under Investigation, covering suth Kquestious as the effect on nutrition ^ root of animals and man of a single plant See ration, the mineral needs of animals. S. C I .ho methods of ripening cheese, the mprovement of market milk and ihe causes and prevention of animal 1 c disiase. The quiet modest labors t and persistent pitience in the field J and the laboratory of these untiring I workers are doing as much for the welfare of the stato as are the efforts 1 of those who shine conspicuously in the legislative halls. r~^n^TfEEiT^r^r^r^Jr=^ F^Jr^n=3r^> [j] THOSE DIFFICULTIES ^ When the people of a town, through the officials whom they hav? elected to govern thorn, come to the conclusion that the end has been reached in public improvement, it i3 almost sure that everything will remain at a standstill for some time Very often in private life, the reason for failure is to be found in the lack of effort caused by an unreasonable fear of difficulties and obstacles in the way. There is a lack of that Spirit and enorgy which goes to the attack with the determination to overcome and succeed in spite of all obstacles in the way. Just so we find it in the administration of pub lie affairs. Often, some of the mem bers of the board or council, whatever it might be, are bound down J t some promise made during a heated ? campaign, and some movements f.,r | the public good fail to oass for lack / of j ist their votes in its favor. ? unotlilii U.J1 - - ' la uuuiy needed. The "v town has done well and has reached ( 9 the place where other improvements c muse be made in order to keep in (u c lino with the times, but the money lappens to he a littlo short, and j there is a total lack of energy on " the part of those whoso duty it is r ? io provide the funds. There are r ither little dillieulties always aris- ? ng which appear largo accord5 to the words of the mau who in excuse, but which are nothing at p ill ti the way of the man, or body c )f r.cn, who moan to do, regardless )f opposition. Experience in this ? is in everything else has taught .hat it will not do to stop at difli- lulties. Difficulties and obstacles u tho way of achievmont, liko the >ojr, are always with us. From instant a child is born until life ci s sp3nt, and tho body laid in the \v jravo, troubles arise on eyery side l} >f the path. They must be overcome ei ir the life j mrnoy is cut short. No J* ise to pxnof'l. In ViniTft r. ? * __.r u uico town ^ vithiall of tbo modern improve- p nents, and still something more, ^ /ithoub going in like men to over- l| ome the difficulties in the way. One !c ?ay wait forever and then not find ^ suitable time or place for starting at nd finishing some important mat- S( er in life. In speaking of marriage, fc i has been said that no man or wo- w lan has ever found a time when ^ tiey thought it was exactly th^ ight time to tie the knot. The rea oc jn men and women marry there- ^ >re is not because thoy find a time ht nd place which is exactly right Ti orn ail points of view, but becaus ley want to get married, and the.) .can to marry anyway, and marry p0 ion and there, rogirdless of the ( th mo or the place. If anything is Iji bo accomplishe'3 in bettering Con ay as a town, the time and the ace is now. The end of improve- fie ent in Conway should nover be ached, in fact it can never be da; tilt ached.
