Since the holiday is about blood, gore, dismemberment and all that icky stuff, I thought I'd recommend some movies that go along with this theme. Today,I'm going to discuss my favorite "driver's ed" training films from high school, currently on video. Just kidding. Actually I'm going to review my favorite horror movies of all time. To be honest, it was quite difficult to find enough good horror movies to base a column on since, for every one of the gems listed below, there are literally thousands of turkeys with titles like "Blood-Splattered Chiropractor." After racking my brain a for hours, though, I was able to a come up with a handful of them f and, if you have enough guts, I re- a commend you cnecK one out. v Silence of the Lambs (1991): 4 Just out on video, this is probably r the best film of the year so far. It ^ also offers one of the best perfor- t mances in decades by British actor s Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal "the i Cannibal" Lecter. Lecter is a psy- i, chopath who offers FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) tips h on how to catch a serial killer. In N exchange, she tells him personal / secrets which help him slowly take j control of her mind. Their ex- c changes are intense and excellently r shot and, overall, this film is virtu- \ lit1 WASTED II YOUTH. 1 m. \| r THE GRE DEC 14? Absolutely brainess in some parts but so full of acion, suspense and wit that lack of ogic doesn't really hurt the film, rhe end which, as you would expect. Dits the townsfolk apainst the iwful, angry annelida (if you studed your biology, you'd know what his means) is a classic.(A-). Re-Animator (1985): Occasionilly disgusting but well-written lorror flick that focuses on a docor named Herbert West (Jeffrey ^ombs) who believes he can bring jack the dead with a mysterious jreen goo. His experiments are :uccessful but, as he soon finds >ut, some cadavers are better left lead. Especially the evil Dr. Hill vho loses his head (literally) but is itill able to throw a wrench into best's plans. Available in "Rated" and "unrated" versions and ollowed by a sequel, Bride of the le-Animator, which is totally vorthless.(A). Evil Dead (1983): This looks ike it cost about 10 bucks to make >ut it is still genuinely spooky and iction-packed. The plot revolves iround a group of campers who ind a book that raises the dead ind by the end, most of them fall ictim to various demons or murlerous trees. The frenzied pace nakes it hard to figure out what's ;oing on sometimes but, overall, his film merits its "cult classic" tanding. As with Re-Animator, it, oo, is followed by a totally wordless sequel.(B+). Hell-Raiser (1987): Remember uium 11 13 a uv/iiiiviuai, iiv/vivvj mask wearing maniac out for blood. Unfortunately, when they're not, the film is a snooze so make use of the "fast forward" button whenever neccesary. Followed up by a sequel that sucks because it makes the Cenobites into wimps.(B-). The Fly (1986): Dark, somber and thoroughly disturbing movie which has Jeff Goldblum accidentally turning himself into the title insect The harrowing transformation from man to bug is aptly illustrated with the use of great makeup effects and fine acting on Goldblum's part. Geena Davis is also convincing in her role as Goldblum's increasingly disgusted girlfriend. Unfortunately, as you might expect, there's a sequel and . . . well, you know the rest(A-). Halloween (1978): Overrated, but genuinely creepy, flick about a maniac named Michael Myers who goes on a rampage on "All Hallow's Eve." It seems he's after his sister, played by the always fine Jamie Lee Curtis, but strike one up for the good guys because Detective Loomis (Donald Pleascence) is on his trail. Will Loomis catch him before he kills virtually everybody in Curtis' town? You won't find out until the very end and, by that time, you will be so tense that, if someone were to tap you on the shoulder, you would probably leap right out of your skin. Followed by four hideous sequels, each one worse than the one before.(B+). Well, those are my picks for the best horror movies of all time. Make sure to watch them with a friend or with all the lights in your house on so that, if your house squeaks like houses are prone to do, your paranoia won't make you
