sc. Our state must repair poor image by moving into present century Just when you think South Carolina is getting some respect, Senator Strom Thurmond has to open his mouth at the Thomas Hearings. Senator Thurmond is a symbol of the Old South and old Southern values. While America as a whole moves into the next centurv. South Carolina is still trvine to set into this one. We need J T ,, ?o to help along our state's evolution from a banana republic to a respected member of the Union. Economically, state leaders have to attract high-tech industry and reduce the size of our textile industry. American-made textile manufacturers are a dying breed and by protecting in-state mills through trade baniers, South Carolina is only forcing manufacturers to move abroad. Textile workers can be moved into other fields by means of job retraining. The expense of retraining will be made up for in the long run with a more modem, well-trained South Carolinian work-force. Stop cutting back on education, even if it means running a deficit for a few years. If education is cut to the bone during every recession, long-term progress will never be made to improve our dismal educational system. Caring more about the state's credit rating than the next generation of South Carolinians is probably C P in trv loo* in n/Innoti An in tVlD ft ret nlo^A Ui& i^adun j.v^. id ntAi"iu"iaoi 111 vAiuvauun in uiv nui puw. Archaic moralistic laws restricting alcohol sales and gambling make South Carolina look puritanical. South Carolina is conservative even compared to its other Southern neighbors. Create a state lottery for education and road maintenance. Allow unre- ^ stricted alcohol sales on Sundays and stop requiring S.C. bars to serve liquor in mini-bottles and have a minimum percentage of sales in food. D.vr.Ooteo Dv T-Cun? Preton 231 was my cell last year. Believe it or not, visitation isn't just a burearatic vision, it's also a big waste of money for ur university, already knee-deep in budget cuts nd funding problems. Each year we divvy up hundreds of thouands of dollars to work study and other stuents with nothing better to do but act as watchogs over on-campus residents. Don't blame lem. They aren't responsible for the system, ley simply enforce it for $4.25 an hour. My roommate worked Moore dormitory's lesk all summer 40 hours a week. It had to be erhaps the greatest job in the world. Imagine etting paid minimum wage to sit and watch IBO, talk to your friends on the phone and oc asionally sign in a guest Visitation was quite controversial in its forlative years and of its creators, Mike Fair is no Drunk drivin; I heard a great joke on Carson the other ight. It went something like, "Did you hear ley've outlawed the use of crash test dumiies? Yeah, they're replacing them with drunk ivers." So maybe my roommate thought I was out of iy gourd when she walked into the living room i find me standing on the couch and cheering Jay Leno, but I hope she would have joined ie had she heard his little funny. The penalties for drunk driving in this couny are among the most lax in the world. No here else will you be given a slap on the wrist >r operating a vehicle under the influence of cohol. It amazes me that we don't have stiffer pealties for a crime that has such potential to be eterred. The reason the death tolls are so towring in alcohol-related car accidents every year i because people are not afraid to drive drunk.
