A vaginal suppository that effervesces after insertion and becomes a spermicide foam, Encare Oval was introduced in the fall of 1977 as being 99 percent effective. If that claim were true, the product would be as effective as the birth control pill. But an FDA expert committee ~ expects Encare Oval to be about as effective as similar contraceptives sold without a prescription. W J AJL \/VHLO By Jim Phillips N?ws EftHm Long before Alexander Solzhenitsyn became a household name in the western world, the University of South Carolina Press published his tovels. In fact, the USC Press was the first publisher of Solzhenitsyn's novels unong English speaking countries, said Robert T. King, press director. IN LATE 1963, seven years before Solzhenitsyn won the Nobel Prize or Literature, the press published two of his novels in one volume enitled "We Never Make Mistakes." Solzhenitsyn was brought to the attention of the press by the late Paul N. Blackstock, a professor of Government and Inerrnational Studies at JSC until his death Aug. 14. Blackstock read two of Solzhenitsyn's woks while on a trip to the USSR to improve his command of the Russian language. So impressed was he, according to King, that he mmediately began translating the novels into English. Upon completion of the translations, Blackstock offered the novels to lie university press. The rest is history. Well, not quite. "IT'S A good example of the virtue of university presses losing money," King said. "We published it at a loss for quite some time but it tielped to initiate the process of Solzhenitsyn becoming known in fho west." The novel took seven years to sell 1,000 copies, according to King, However, in 1970, the Soviet author won the Nobel Prize for Literature Mid sales of "We Never Make Mistakes" picked up. Demand for the took increased so much that the book was reprinted in 1971. Solzhenitsyn, hwever, never received a cent of royalties from the sales of the book, King said. A copyright agreement between the U.S. Mid USSR did not exist at the time of the original publication. IT WAS not unusual for translators in either country to publish works of famed authors of the other without permission. "They published Steinbeck and Hemingway extensively without paying them," King said. It is doubtful, however, Solzhenitsyn would have received any compensation for the books had there been a formal agreement. Since the university press must be subsidized by the state legislature, the state would have had to appropriate money for the payment of royalties to Solzhenitysyn. South Carolina, according to King, was very conservative at tne time and probably would not have appropriated funds for payment of a Russian author. "I'VE NEVER found any evidence that the issue came up," he said. The University of South Carolina Press had achieved worldwide acclaim in other areas, the director said. The most recent attention is for textbooks used in Australia, England and South Africa.
