W01a WoIfp BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor ' Carolina's postseason bowl hopes were greatly diminished Saturday night when North Carolina State put on an im pressive i offensive display in front of several bowl scouts, beating the Gamecocks 56 35. The Wolfpack's offensive spectacular was witnessed by representatives of the Peach Bowl, who naturally were impressed with the awesome firepower that State possesses. Prior to the game the Peach Bowl scouts said that the game's winner would have good odds to make the postseason affair, but following the game those same scouts refused to count Carina out of the running. If you win this game you're a shoo-in for the bowls. "There still are possibilities of making a bowl through the back door route, but if we had won this game tonight we'd have been in through the front door." State was apparently also aware of the presence of the bowl scouts and they impressed them by picking on the injury-riddled defensive corps of the Gamecocks. For only the second quarter of the contest was Carolina's defensive able to stifle the Wolf pack offense. USC's offense, which had slumbered throughout the initial quarter, also came alive in the second behind the quarterbacking of Jeff Grantz and the long runs of Jay Hodgin to threaten State. Touchdown jaunts of 52 and 36 yards by Hodgin gave Carolina a 14-14 tie midway through the second quarter. State's offense followed Hodgin's second score with a 53-yard touch down drive, with Charley Young scoring from five yards out, to regain the lead for good. Young, who gained 107 yards during the game on 19 carries, scored two more touchdowns and Stan Fritts added one more before Carolina could score again. Grantz was injured on the first serieh of the fourth period and USC's Dietzel again called on Ron Bass, who had started the game for the Gamecocks. Lou Holtz ...team headed for bowl? In contrast to Bass' earlier ef forts when he failed to move the club, he enjoyed a quite successful fourth period. Bass led the USC team into the end zone three straight times with backs Casper Carter, Randy Spinks and Hodgin scoring. Unfortunately for USC,- the Gamecock defense did not stop State as they had done when Grantz led Carolina to two scores in the second quarter. Bass' point productions were easily matched by State which also scored three times in the final period. Most of our depth is fresh men and anytime you have. to rely on freshmen you're going to have some tough going." Carolina played nine freshmen on defense during the game. "Our freshmen are going to be good in a few years," Dietzel said, "but right now they are still playing like freshmen." "State ran up a lot of points tonight because they are after national prestige," Dietzel said, "But its a long war." The inexperience of the fresh men showed on the game's final play. With four seconds to play in the already-decided contest, USC's defeose called timeout. As if to punish Ca:rolina for prolonging his stay on the field, Wolfpack quarterback Dave Buckey called a pass play which resulted in a 27 yard scoring strike. The Wolfpack showing did gain them some prestige in the eyes of the bowl scouts present at the game.
