Sports Editor Injuries--both serious ones that kept Carolina players out of the game and nagging ones that hampered other players' per formances--were termed by North Carolina State Head Coach Lou Holtz and USC's Paul Dietzel as a prime reason the Wolfpack was able to push USC's defense around for 56 points Saturday night. "Carolina was a bruised and battered team after their game with LSU last week," Holtz said following his team's sixth win. "They were just as tired as all get out." NC State gained 330 yards rushing and had two runners with over 100 rushing yards. Charley Young gained 107 yards in 19 carries; Willie Burden had 122 yards on 18 carries. Overall, State had 556 total offensive yards. "We had a lot of defensive players who got run over by their running backs," Dietzel said. "Our defense was just too bruised up to stop them." USC starting defensive end Bob Roe missed his third straight game with injuries and outside linebacker Grahl Phillips missed all but four plays with a hip injury. Other defensive players who played with injuries included strong linebacker Bill Cregar, who did not practice all week after suffering a slight concussion against LSU, end Steve Gribble, Air FO schol Some peopi arship to joir aren't enoui tax-f ree, in y And free flyi benefit of all Interested? He did not return to action for the rest of the game. "We came into the game really bruised up," Dietzel said,"and we got more bruised up tonight.. They are a' tough team physically.. We got whipped by a team we just couldn't physically beat." Because of the injuries USC had to play nine freshmen on defense at different points of the game. "We were playing an awful lot of fresh men, especially on defense," Dietzel said. "And NC State is not the kind of team to break freshmen in on." Meanwhile, although it scored 35 points, USC's offense was troubled by an injury to quarterback Jeff Grantz. Grantz had his leg in a cast until Friday to protect a bad ankle, and he did not start the game. Freshman Ron Bass started at quarterback but Grantz replaced him after State took a 14-0 first quarter lead. Grantz played until the begin ning of the fourth quarter when he left the game after getting the wind knocked out of him. He gained only four yards rushing on five carries and completed just three of nine passes for 39 yards. "Jeff was so gimpy and Ron so much smoother looking in pre game practice that we decided to start Bass," Dietzel said. "But when Grantz comes in he picks the whole team up." rce ROTC arship p fringe a might need to be coaxel 1 the Air Force ROTC.
