At Carolina, as at scores of other schools, however, at least 50 per cent of the studenLts commute from city addresses. For them there are no dorm corners or far-away homes. Town students face their own set of unique problems. Transpor tation, for instance. Some live close enough to campus to walk. Others havi, a wide choice of ve hicles---hicycles. motorcycles, fam y ily cars, farm machinery, roller skates or buses. Anything that rolls will do. Vehicles require coins, however. and few students are over-supplied with coins. Not every student's parents are over-supplied with coins. either. Even with a registered car, it is nearly impossible to park in a student lot or on some of the streett near campus at certain hours of the day. Research pin points these hours to between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., give or take an hour. Even at home there are prob lems. While dorm students are distracted front studies by school: activities and campus life, town students face family activities and home life. At home there are doz ens of exciting things like baby sitting and dishwashing to keep one from hitting the books. Small brothers and sisters are rarely helpful. Even facing other students is not' always easy. Dorm students have a talent for making home and mother sound like diseases. Would you believe home and mother have their advantages? Mothers are more understanding than housemothers at times and are al.-o good for things like sew ing on buttons. They cook better than Slater, too, as a rule. Tow%n students don't usually have to sign out when stepping outside for a breath of fresh air. Nor do they have to pack a suit ease when they get the urge to .,pend a quiet weekend at home w%ith the family. l)ur;ng holidays .hey get home quicker, stay home longer. Most of them don't have to do their own laundry and never %% rite home for money. Hut they also spend a lot of time wishing they lived a restricted vaimpus lift. with the other under privileged 50 per cent. But then the same question could be applied to mountain climbers, mine-sweep Lrs, and highway patrolmen. The hazardous excitement that is cre ated by taking a chance is the ,ompulsion to go. So, bright and as early as their last class on Friday lets out, the students are off. A few make it to Five Points without car trouble, but inevitably some of the vehicles will get sick. Slowly, this unmitigated en thusiasm fades as they ride up and down the rows of "NO VAC ANCY" signs or turn down offers of $6 a day rent for a roof over their heads. But they always seem to find a three-room apartment which a,erages out to $2.10/day apiece. The fun begins with the transfer of es-entials to the living quarters. So the bottles, cans, cigarettes, sunglasses, baby oil, peanut but ter, church keys. towels, rollers (as the case may be). and a few clothes are dragged in. During the next few days, time i, spent "roasting the bud," get :ing the hair to look like Phyllis Diller's, and g e n e r al I y being "happy." Nobody thinks they are getting enough sun until water h!isters suddenly appear. Then the sun is momentarily cursed for taking advantage of them. The stomach usual. suffers the most from these weekend jaunts. [lot dogs, hamburg;::-s. peanut but ter sandw iches, and heer just don't constitute a soothing or well roinded diet. At least it is a cheap diet and nobody passes out from hunger. And then there are always the "Superc,ck heroes" who think jumping off the side of the pier nto broKen beer bottles at 3:30 a.m. ,r runnintt into the moonlit waves fully clothed is exciting. Some students regress to the y nder years and ride all the !ai-rai-ing rides at the Pavilion, ke the "Xild Mouse" or the .\erry-(o- Round." The group in ev\itably at-racts attention as they -tagge r up on the giraffes, ele 'han:s. and lions -inging "I.W Bot I!es of lieer on the Wall" while holding cotton candy in their left hand. Of cour.,e. man. students are much more conser% ative in their actions. They quietly- sit around w ith a guitar, bottles, cans, etc., until the wee hours of the morn ing when they slowly fade away. All in all it is a great strain on the stability, of the student to re cover from their weekend of fun and relaxati.n. The hour must ap proach wthen they are once more 'oluimbia-hound. It is back to the Moks and all that.
