Go, Go Gamecocks Win Over Bulldogs Carolina fans saw the Noe win policy Saturday night for the first time this season when a scrappy USC team outplayed fa vored Georgia at the Field House and won 77-60. Seniors Ronnie Collins, Bill Yarbrough, and Jimmy Collins scored all except eight of Caro lina's points, but the opening victory was a team effort if there ever was one. Georgia, who had proven their strength by beating Clemson earlier in the season, was un nerved by the eight-point lead the Gamecocks built up before the Bulldogs scored their first point. DEFENSE The aggressive South Carolina defense kept Georgia off balance all night and did not give up a field goal until 13 minutes had elapsed. Ronnie Collins totaled 37 points and 10 rebounds plus many valuable assists for what Coach Chuck Noe called, "the finest night of his career." The Winnsboro, S. C. lad, who set an ACC free throw accuracy record his sophomore year, hit fi; 11 of 12 from the line. Knock ( Paladins Fold In Final Half BY DICK BIGGS Sports Writer Carolina's "Go-Go-Go" Game cocks, led by a 6-3 youngster from Winnsboro, S. C., named Ronnie Collins, defeated the Fur man Paladins Tuesday night, 45-32, to extend tneir winning streak to two games. Collins dominated first period play, scoring 14 of Carolina's 17 points while shooting an incredi ble 78.0% from the floor. Ironic ally enough, it was big John Schroeder who sank the first two points for the Gamecocks, but it was Collins who kept Carolina with a lead that was never re linquished. Running their 3-2 offense on sheer discipline and determina tion, the "Go-Go-Go" boys ex hibited the will to win in a delib erate, but contagious manner. STUDENT SUPPORT Fans never ceased yelling and applauding Coach Chuck Noe's hustling, scrambling Gamecock five. And no one expressed the glory of winning any more than John Schroeder. His big grin was re evident each time the Gamecocks te scored, yet his sincerity of pur rs pose was easily detected when :e Carolina needed the "big play." ." The halftime score read Caro g lina 17, Furman 16. In the dress !r ing room Chuck Noe was in com e, plete control: "In the first twenty minutes they played you nose to a nose. Now there are twenty min utes left in this game, and in twenty minutes somebody is go ing to crack and it had better not be you." Ronnie Collins and Bill Yar brough accounted for the first twelve Carolina tallies in the second half giving the Cocks a 29-20 lead. At this point the clock read 11:22. The latter por tion of the period was primarily consumed with Ronnie Collins at f1 the free throw lane and with an e effective USC "freeze" offense. y TIlE "BOMBER" g The Winnsboro "Bomber" found e the range on 12-18 field goal at ;t tempts, and added 6-9 from the charity stripe to give him a game total of 30 points. His 37 ypoints against Georgia three nights prior to the Furman game makes this his second consecutive n game with 30 or more points. Ronnie has totaled 84 points in three games to give him a 28.0 average. Jimmy Collins and Bill Yar brough aided R. GARDNER-WEBB The ballhawking, sharpshooting, Freshmen - type Gamecocks easily iefeated an outclassed Gardner Webb Junior College team 101-62 here Tuesday night for their third traight victory. Although a complete team ef fort, the "Battling Biddies" were led by Al Salvadori and Gary ,regor in the point department. The guards provided a quick ianded defense that caused numer us G-W lost halls. Guard Earl Lovelace got the :eam on the move early in the rame with two field goals and hree from the foul line. Blending nto action came Salvadori who took charge of the "little" Game ocks and forced a Gardner-Webb time out one-quarter way through the first half. At that point the U.S.C. Frosh led 11 to 4. DEFENSE Playing heads-up defense they held the visitors from Nor'i Caro lina to nine by the mid-point of the first half.
