by.. Monday started out to be a normal day for all of us. We made those early morning classes despite a hard weekend, and if we lived in Preston or were interested in seeing Sigma Nu win the Campus Flag Football Championship, then we probably stood on Davis Field and cheered for our team. The sun shone most of the (lay, but the biting wind made walking out-of-doors a little unpleasant. Yes, it seemed like just a normal December Day with a week and a half left before Christmas vacation, but you know it turned out to be a little out of the ordinary. It all started a little after six in the evening. I had just finished dinner, and feeling a bit reluctant to rush into that favorite pastime of students called studying. I wandered over to the Carolina Field House. It was "just as dark and gloomy, as it always is when there is nobody there to shake the walls with boistrous cheering. A few players had come out to practice a little early to throw a few at the basket before the serious work began, while other disinterested looking individuals milled about the scorer's table. As I tramped around the walkway in the direction of the scorer's table, I noticed a rather distinguished look ing gentleman standing on the court. As I drew closer, I realized that it was the President of the University, Dr. Thomas F. Jones. Yes, the President of the Univer sity had come to pay a visit to a team which lately seems to have made a hit with everybody. Soon Coach Noe appeared and began intro ducing some of the players "WE'RE GOING WIN" to )r. Jones. While President Jones chatted with Noe and the ballplayers, his young son and daughter dribbled a basketball up and down the walkway. Soon other people began to pour in through the doors of the Field House and find places for themselves in the stands facing the players' bench. Noe called his team in to the bench, and then introduced each one of them to Presi dent Jones. Shortly thereafter practice began. It seemed to be just an ordinary practice with Coach Noe going over some of the strategy for the Furman game. As he talked, people continued to wander in and find them selves seats. Soon Noe beckoned to the crowd of almost two hundred to come and sit behind the players' bench. What followed will probably be long remembered by those of us that were there. On the court before us was a man who has given his life to coaching. He has had some great teams and he will have more in the future, and he talked to us as no other coach ever has or ever could. Chuck Noe is the most sincere person in the world, and when he says that he will give you a winner, he means just that. He did not talk in ter'ms of winning alone on Monday night, but in terms of what we as students can (do for the athletic program at South Carolina. It is our hollering and shouting that can spur a team on to victory. We must not be front-runners who follow the team just wvhen they are winning, but we must give the boys our lungs and hearts even in defeat. Coach Noe briefly introduced each one of his players to the people assembled. He told just what each boy's capabili ties wvere and why he wanted him on his team (OUR TEAM). "All of our, boys are good boys," says Noe. The boys from Seven averaged four interceptions per game. Zone 7 should be heralded for their efforts this year. It was hard work and desire that brought the Campus Champion ship to a team that may have been the best ever in the history of Intramural Flag Football. Congratulations to the Magnifi cent "7." Of The Week The selection of Ronnie as the outstanding Gamecock-of the-week is well justified. Against Georgia, Collins put 37 points through the hoop to lead his mates to a 77-60 vic tory over the Bulldogs. He also played a fine defensive game and was the second lead ing rebounder with 10. This past Tuesday, Ronnie hit 12-18 from the field to pace the Cocks to a hard - earned 45-32 victory over state rival Furman. Collins consistently found a "hot hand" from his favorite corner position, and proceeded to shoot at an amaz ing field goal percentage. Also this week The State named 'mim as their outstand ing player in the state. With G7 points against Georgia and Furman, Ronnie well deserves this honor, and the Gamecocks Sports Staff is proud to pre sent Ronnie Collins as its first "Gamerooster" of the week. ~L E T S AYto stay alert uli stimulants Next time monotony make. you feel drowsy while drivig, working or studying, do as millions do . . . perk up with safe, effective NoDo: tablets.
