Tuesday was St Valentine si day?the day dedicated to love and lovers. The significance of the day is hard to trace as being at all relevant to the memory of the martyred saint whose name it liears. St Valentine was a little known saint of the third century, who is said to have cured a blind girl to whom the Emperor Claudius had assigned the -delicate task of proselyting him to paganism; but when the miraclee of healing had been performed the Emperor's plan not only failed *>ut the girl herself embraced, <Christianty. Whether or not this | nameless heroine embraced St Valentine simultaneously, thus giving a sentimental semblance to her conversion and imparting an amatory flavor to the day of the good saint, which has lasted through the centuries, is left only to the imagination of the gentle reader. By some it is thought that the sentiment of the day comes down in some way from the ancient Roman festival of the Lupercalia. with a Christian sanction; hut this tot), seems largely conjectural. At the Lnperealian feast, celebrated in the month of February, it was customary to place the names of young women in a box and i ? xi? have the men araw mem out us chance directed. A custom similar to this existed in England and France for centuries. From JVpy's Diary we learn that in the reign of Charles II it was the custom to put the names of married women as well as single ones into the box and have the men draw them out, the drawer to have the drawee as "his valentine" for one year. Such a custom, we fancy, at this day would put some one "in a 1k>x," sure enough, making alxmt as lively entertainment as tiie average "hot supper"' among the Colored population. XXX Governor Blease pardoned Cothran Pinson last Monday, a young white man frdm Laurens county, who was convicted in 1909 on the charge of killing his friend Thorn well Boyce near Cross Hill. Pinson was sentenced for two years and his term would have expired within a few months.
