St Valentine's Day.
Tuesday was St Valentine si
day?the day dedicated to love
and lovers. The significance of
the day is hard to trace as being
at all relevant to the memory
of the martyred saint whose
name it liears. St Valentine was
a little known saint of the third
century, who is said to have cured
a blind girl to whom the Emperor
Claudius had assigned the
-delicate task of proselyting him
to paganism; but when the miraclee
of healing had been performed
the Emperor's plan not only failed
*>ut the girl herself embraced,
<Christianty. Whether or not this

nameless heroine embraced St
Valentine simultaneously, thus
giving a sentimental semblance
to her conversion and imparting
an amatory flavor to the day of
the good saint, which has lasted
through the centuries, is left only
to the imagination of the
gentle reader.
By some it is thought that the
sentiment of the day comes down
in some way from the ancient
Roman festival of the Lupercalia.

would put some one "in a 1k>x,"
sure enough, making alxmt as
lively entertainment as tiie average

Colored population.

tron saint of lovers and as long
,as hoys and girls find mutual
j attraction in one another's society,

an aviator broke the world's
record by ascending 800 feet into
the Stygian darkness of night.
He carried a passenger on the
second trip. Pretty good nerve
it took for a passenger to go up
800 feet in the darkness, especially
when the aviator bore
the suggestive name of Coffyn.

Samuel J Wylie, a white man of
Chester county, committed suicide
Tuesday morning by shooting himself
through the head. Ill health ia
supposed to have been the cause.

There were 1205 persons tried ior
mnrder in South Carolina last year.
There were 86 persons convictedVif
murder during the same period and
103 were found not guilty, no bill
being found against 16.

Governor Blease pardoned Cothran
Pinson last Monday, a young white
man frdm Laurens county, who was
convicted in 1909 on the charge of
killing his friend Thorn well Boyce
near Cross Hill. Pinson was sentenced
for two years and his term
would have expired within a few
months.

Mrs Rosa D Hayes, the woman
who shot to death Robert M Floyd,
a young medical student, on February
4, 1911, at her home at Tabor,
just over the line from Horry coun*??

and Lloyd Hayes, the brother of
Neal, have been bound over in the
sum of $1,000 each. Such was the
result of the preliminary hearing
held at Whiteville, N C.Tuesday, the
