"We call attention to the notico of Wm.B. Barton, to be found in another column. Mr. J. S. Alhergotti has recovered from his late indisposition, and is again at business. There is a scarcity of corn at pres ent in tho market, but good crops are in the fields. . . Solicitor Buttz is on a warm trail of certain misdeeds in Count}' paper. Cheer him on; There will bo a protracted meeting at the Baptist church begining on Sat urday next. We regret to learn of the protracted illness of Captain Mortimer Glover at the residence of his fat her. We learn that, a school will be open ed here 1 y the Rev. G. A. Eough, thc pastor of the Luthc-an church. Our friend Fischer at the corner, is doing a lively business, ho spares no pains iu pleasing his customers. A market for fresh meats and vege tables is badly wanted; Will not some enterprising person sec about the matter The delegates of the Tax Union will m et oil the 5th, and tho County Tax Uuioii on the 7th of September next. Mn. Kirk Robinson is ready to receive subscriptions and attend to the business of the Times ut his book store. Mr. W. Sistrunk brought in a very fine lot offish on Saturday last; among them several trout weighing eight and nine pounds. His excellency Governor Moses will be re-indicted after his term of office; Then the $6000 job will be fully ven tilated. Poor Moses; The patrons of Mr. Mellichamp's school will take notice that the exer- j cises commence on the first day of September, instead of the first Monday. See constitution of Tax Union in our issue of to-day. Is'ut it sulphur, and brimstone, nitre and glycerine? None but "the wicked flee when no man pursucth." Read and join every one who says he is free. TnE stranger who got drunk on sour, tried to sleep it off in a horse rack, and finally took lodging at the guard house. He thinks our restau rants require a chemist to examine the quality of soup dispensed. . That twenty foot crossing at tho railroad on Russell street ifnot widened will cost the South Carolina Railroad a big lawsuit, and that will hardly pay for the consequences of a smash up of some vehicle precipitated in thegulley. TiiEcorrc?poudcntfroin Ornngeburg of the Charleston "Sun" is the same who lately wrote for the Times over the nom dc plume of Snotlgrass from Charleston. The gentleman has re turned to Charleston after a short visit here. Mr. Ezekiel is out again in a large advertisement, and is in at his new stcro on Market street. His clock stands still over the door where ho lately held forth, but he has moved on, and the elock must do the same, as well as the crowd who will be repaid for their so doing. Success to tho worthy; An important feature of ?rangeburg farming is decreasing every year. "We refer to the growing of rice. Every farmer is intent upon cotton, and pro visions to sell are merely nominal. The result is a largs sale, and outlay for advances of all that is made. The annual sale of whiskey iu ?r angeburg county is estimated at $45. 000. Of tobacco at $60.000, and of segars $5000. The voluntary contri butions in aid of Missionary societies, Bible cause, and Sunday schools will hardly reach 8500. So says one*who ought to know. The trains on the South Carolina Railroad are draped with crape in memory of Captain Butler agent at Augusta who was brutally and without provocation shot by a mulatto named Murrell. Immediately as it became known that Captain Butler had died, i about four hundred of the citizens of Augusta went to the jail, took Murrell 1 out, tried him, and shot him to death. An old gentleman who live in the neighberhood where electioneering has been going on for the past two weeks, says that almost every night a cow or sheep has been offered up to the God dess of Liberty. The old gentleman is reconciled to the amnesty proclama tion, but he thinks radical hustings are a big hurrah to cover up sheep stealing. Query: Do the nominees eat the meat, or pull the wool? Notice? The exercises of Orange burg: Academy will bo resumed on Tuesday tho first day of September next, in the Fair Building, 81 P.M. Pupils will please attend promptly. JAMES S. HEY WARD. 20 " Principal. Among and chiefest of the educa tional advantages of Mr. Hoy ward's Academy is that of scholarships to Northers colleges of unquestioned standing, to bo awarded ns prizes to his papiis. Tho most proficient earning the proud position of entering upon n collegiate course at a very nominal ex pense. The scholar so endorsed by Mr Heyward will have his expense de frayed to New York or Boston, from either of these places to the collcgo selected, the expense of travel will fall upon the pupil.
