C., Thursday, April 13,1972 Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Maffett Halfacre announce the engagement of their daughter, Harriett Ann, to Jerry Melvin Haltiwanger, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Edward Haltiwanger, all of Newberry. The wedding is planned for Saturday, June 17, at 8 p.m. in The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. No formal invitations will be sent in New berry but relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Paul Kibler announce the engagement of their daughter, Iris Elizabeth (Libby) to William Woodrow Bedenbaugh, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Bedenbaugh, Sr. of Prosperity. The wedding is planned for Sunday, June 25, at 5 p.m. in Saint Philip’s Lutheran Church. Friends and relatives of the couple are in vited to attend the ceremony. Brenda Riddle contestant A beautiful brunette High School Junior from Newberry is the third contestant to enter the Miss Newberry Pageant, an nounced Pageant Chairman Jay Polen. Lovely Miss Brenda Sue Riddle is a junior at Newberry High School, Newberry. She is 17 years old, the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Braswell of Route 3, Newberry. Miss Riddle is the third of an anticipated five contestants who will compete in the Miss Newberry Pageant to be held April 15 at Newberry High School under sponsorship of the Newberry Jaycees. Miss Riddle is the current Miss Junior at Newberry High School and was a semi-finalist this year in the Miss Newberry Hi Contest. She, or any one of the con testants this year, may well be the new Miss America. The winner of the Miss Newberry Pageant will enter the Miss South Carolina Pageant to be held at Greenville Memorial Au ditorium in July as an observ er before competing next year. College paper wins awards The student newspaper at Newberry College, “The In dian/’ took six awards at the spKng meeting of the South Carolina Collegiate Press Asso ciation (SCCPA) Saturday at Charleston. Competing with student publi cations with an enrollment un der 1,000 the Newberry paper was named the “Best College Newspaper in South Carolina” for its 1971 issues. The news paper also received five awards of excellence: for editorial page layout, first place; interpreta tive news analysis, second place individual news story, second place; pictorial feature, third place; and page one layout, third place. The award winning newspaper was edited by Ellen Williamson Newberry senior; she was as sisted by a staff of fifteen as sistant editors, photographers, and reporters. “The Indian,” also won the “Best Newspaper” award in 1970 for the issues published in 1969. Book fair at high school The Newberry High School English Department will spon sor a student book fair from April 17 to April 21. Students will be able to browse and pur chase books during the hours of 8;30 to 4;00 P.M. Books will be on display in the Library. The book fair committee in vites all students, parents and visitors to attend the fair. The fair will encourage student in terest in reading and in build ing home libraries, and will al so contribute to a worthwhile project. All profits will be used for equipment for the English Department. The book fair display will in clude attractive new books from many publishers in all popular price ranges: wonderful books to read or to give as gifts. All reading interests will be repre sented, including classics, fic tion, biographies, adventure sto ries, science, nature, crafts, mystery and reference books. The committee is working with Educational Reading Service, a professional book fair com pany, to furnish an individual selection of books for the fair. Jasper Chapter meets at Saluda The Jasper Chapter, DAR, will meet on Friday afternoon, April 14th, at 3:30 at the home of Mrs. Lester F. Hembel in Saluda, S. C. Associate hos tesses will be Mrs. A. L. Brad ley, Mrs. J. B. Speake, Mrs. J. A. Long and Mrs. W. M. Garlington. Please note the change in time of meeting. Antique show next weekend The Newberry Antique Show will be held April 21-23 in the National Guard Armony on By- Pass 76, Newberry, S. C. The show is sponsored by the New berry Exchange Club with pro ceeds being used for local pro jects. Dealers from several states will exhibit collections of anti ques, all offered for sale to the public. This show will have some thing for everyone. Silver, china glass, coins, guns, old books and furniture. The show hours will be 11 a.m.-lO p.m. on Friday and Sa turday and 1-6 p.m. on Sun day. Advance Sale tickets are on sale at Main Street Pharmacy, Bergen’s Men and Boys Shop, Trader John’s Antiques and The Newberry Sun Office. Ad vance price is 75 cents. Admis sion at door is $1.00. Atwater elected GOP delegate Lee Atwater, a student at Newberry College from Colum bia, was elected alternate dele gate-at-large to the Republican National Convention in San Die go, August 21-25. The election of the 20 year-old history ma jor came at the biennial S. C. Republican Convention, March 25. Atwater, as state chairman of the S. C. College Republi cans had his. speech to the convention interrupted a dozen times by spirited applause, a- mong them two standing ova tions. Snuff It Out Approximately 64,000 Amer icans died last year of lung can cer which could be cut drastic ally if people stopped smoking cigarettes. The American Can cer Society says if you smoke, quit; if you don’t smoke, don’t start. The Madrigalians and the Woodwind Quintet, two student musical groups at Newberry College, will pre sent concerts as part of the College’s Spring Festival of Music at 8 p.m. Monday, April 17, in the new Alumni Music Center. The Madrigalians under the direction of Karl Kinard, Jr., will sing a selection of spirituals, folk songs, and madrigals. The Quintet directed by Dr. John Wagner will play a variety of numbers including some contemporary ones written for woodwind instruments.
