Before leaving Newberry, Dr. Carter was active in community and civic affairs, having serv ed as chairman of the Board of Directors of Newberry Aca demy and chairman of the Ad ministrative Board of Central United Methodist Church. He is married to the former Elizabeth B. Baker. They have two sons, Sydney Jr. and Richard. The Newberry College Singers will present their annual spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 16, in the Wiles Chapel on the campus. The voice choral group will,present Arthur Honnegger’s “King David,” the chronicle of the shepherd king of the Old Testament. County family income $7,504 Average family income was $7,504 in Newberry County, South Caolina in 1969, compar ed with $7,621 for the State, according to a report on the 1970 census by the Bureau of the Census, U. S. Department of Commerce. Per capita in come for the county amounted to $2,284, the report shows. The 1970 census counted 29,- 273 residents in the county; 0.1 percent were foreign bom and 0.3 percent native bom with one or both parents of foreign birth. Among the county’s 27,105 in habitants age 5 and over in 1970, 1,220 were living in a dif ferent county within the State in 1965, and 1,267 in a different State. In the population age 16 and over, 76.6 percent of the men and 48.3 percent of the women were in the labor force. Among the employed, 26.8 percent were holding white collar jobs, and 10.7 percent were government workers. About 53.9 percent of the mar ried women with husband pre sent were in the labor force, and 55.4 percent of these wives had children under six. There were 7,556 persons 3 to 34 years old enrolled in school. In the 2&-and-older pop ulation, 30.0 percent of the men and 32.1 percent of the wo men were high school gra duates. College’s director of athletics. “With the new bleachers,” Herren explained, “we can have two basketball courts for intramural play and free-time activity.” The intramural program at the College, already one of the strongest extracurricular acti vities on the campus, will get another boost with a new in tramural playing field west of MacLean Gymnasium. The field will be used for touch football and softball for women. Nield Gordon, the College’s basketball coach, who will di rect the intramural program next year, commented that with the new facilities which double what we have used in the past, “We will be able to have more participation by both men and women and more games can be played in basketball, foot ball, softball, volleyball, and tennis. Dr. Carter, a graduate of The Citadel, did graduate work at the University of South Caro lina prior to attending the Me dical College of South Carolina, where he received his M. D. de gree in June 1961.
