C., Thursday, April 10, 1969—PAGE 7 More vets in 40-49 age group The average age of the na tion’s 26,656,000 veterans is 44.2 years, according to figures compiled by the Veterans Ad ministration. The VA’s breakdown of vet erans in civilian life shows that the average age of WW2 veterans, of which there are 14,650,000, is 49.3 years, and foi the 1,705,000 who served in WW1 the average is 74.3 years. Stanley Zuk, VA Regional Manager, of Columbia, said there are 7,000 surviving vet erans of the Spanish-American war and their average age is 89.9 years. The original force of Indian fighters numbered 106,000, but today there are only two sur viving veterans of those wars —Reginald A. Bradley, Grass Valley, Calif., who was 101 years of age last October 25, and Fredrak W. Fraske, Chica go, who was 97 years old on March 8 of this year. Vietnam Era veterans (those who served in the Armed for ces after August 4, 1964) av erage 26.1 years, the V. A. notes, pointing out that there are 2,760,000 men and women in this classification. Veterans who served in the Drown victim is found after two months The body of a Spartanburg man was found about 10 a. m. Tuesday in Broad River near Parr Shoals Dam about 17 miles south of the point where he drowned more than two months ago. Fairfield County Sheriff Leroy Montgomery said the body of Ray Floyd, 28, of Rt. 1, Roe buck, was discovered by work ers at the Parr Shoals Dam. The victim drowned in Broad River about 16 miles east of Newberry Jan. 21. The sheriff said the body had gone over the dam and was wedged in rocks about 200 yards beyond the dam. The victim and two other persons were in a boat which overturned in the swift current of the water when it was at flood stage. The boat capsized after an anchor the man had dropped overboard became caught in rocks on the bottom. The other two men managed to hold onto the boat which floated about two miles downstream to an island where they were rescued. Mrs. Roton, 71, service Monday Mrs Sudie Fulmer Roton, 71, widow of Bennie R. Roton, died Saturday at Columbia Hospital after a lingering illness. Mrs. Roton was born in New berry, the daughter of the late John T. and Mary Elizabeth Bullard Fulmer. She was a member of Mayer Memorial Lutheran Church. She is survived by three sons, Raymond H. and James E. Ro ton, both of Newberry, Clarence E. Roton of Lexington, five daughters, Mrs. R. S. Wertz of Saluda, Mrs. Elton Wicker, Mrs. C. T. Millstead and Mrs. George R. Summer, all of New berry, Mrs. Joe Sanders of An derson; three brothers, J. T. Fulmer and Clarence Fulmer, both of Newberry and James Fulmer of Joanna; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Lunsford of Clinton and Mrs. Harry Barrett of Woodruff; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The biggest group of veter ans, about 9.5 million, is in the 40 to 49 year range, while the smallest (some 14,000) group has an average age of 85 years and over. VA statis tics also reveal that there are 30,000 veterans under 20 years of age. Of the total numebr of vet erans in the United States 23,319,000 qualify for wartime benefits, the VA claims. Zuk said veterans desirous of receiving information about benefits for which they may be eligible are encouraged to contact their nearest VA of fice. WITH MEN IN THE SERVICES FT. SAM HOUSTON-Army Private Sims H. Price, 23, son of Mrs. Julia S. Price, Route 1, completed an eight week dental assistant basic course at the Army Medical Field Service, Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, Tex., Feb. 28. During the course he was pre pared to assist dental officers in the examination, care, and treatment of teeth and the oral region. He was also instructed Miss Coward, 29 rites Tuesday Miss Teresa W. Coward, 29, died Sunday afternoon at the Newberry Memorial Hospital af ter an illness of 12 years. Miss Coward was born in Un ion and was the daughter of L. A. and Pauline Moore Cow ard. She was a member of the Lewis Methodist Church. She attended the Newberry schools and was a graduate of New berry High School. Miss Coward is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Coward, Newberry; one sister, Peggy Dale Coward, Winthrop College and Newberry ;one bro ther Dean Alvin Coward, New berry; her paternal grandmoth er, Mrs. J. L. Coward of Un ion; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Moore, Un ion; and a number of uncles and aunts. Funeral services were held Tuesday from Lewis United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Alley, Rev. Jesse Griffin and Rev. J. W. Wiley conducting the service. Interment was in New berry Memorial Gardens. County native died last week Mrs. Mary Salina Lever Townsend, 63, wife of B. Funeral services were Thurs day in Enoree Baptist Church. Mrs.Nancy Ward rites Wednesday Mrs. Nancy Wheeler Ward, 74 of Prosperity, died Monday at Newberry hospital. She was a native of Newberry County, daughter of James Sid- ley and Leila Miller Wheeler. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Anna Kugler Circle. She was a retir ed teacher. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Pearl Barnes of Prosperity. Funeral services were con ducted Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Raymond Brock and the Rev. J. Hilton Roof. Burial was in the Prosperity Cemetery. Local man’s brother dies H. Ray Abrams, 65, died at Edgefield Tuesday. He was the victim of drowning while fish ing alone on a small lake in Edgefield. He was a native of Newberry and had lived in Aiken since 1949. He was a retired salesman for Dillard Paper Company. Services were held in Aiken Thursday with burial following in Mt. Olive Cemetery in John ston. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Annabelle Powell Abrams; a daughter, Mrs. Bob Sawyer of Aiken; a sister, Mrs. J. W. Taylor of Gastonia, N. C.; a brother Pinckney N. Abrams of Newberry. Last rites for Mrs. Bowers, 79 Mrs. Annie Rebecca Nichols Bowers, 79, widow of Johnnie Hamilton Bowers, Sr., died on Wednesday afternoon of last week at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital, after a lin gering illness. Mrs. Bowers was bom in this county, the daughter of the late J. Sampson and Sarah Frances Longshore Nichols. She was a member of Silverstreet Luther an Church. She is survived by three sons, Harold and Guy Bowers, both of Newberry and J. H. Bowers, Jr., of Silverstreet; three dau ghters, Mrs. Carl (Catherine) Long of Silverstreet, Mrs. Max ie Hawkins of Prosperity and Mrs. Bill Long of Newberry; a grandson w horn she reared, Jimmy Bowers of Silverstreet; one sister Mrs. N. R. Lester of Newberry; nineteen grandchild ren and 19 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday at Silverstreet Lutheran Church by the Rev. H. J. C. Lindler. Interment was in the church cemetery Active pallbearers were Clyde Hawkins, Toney Bowers, Larry, Eddie, Johnny and Roy Long.
