PAGE 8—The Newberry Sun, Newberry, S. C., Thursday, April 10, 1969 BY THE WAY (Continued from page 1) all, incompetence. He was not a flashy orator, and never aspired to be. In deed, because he preferred sim plicity in language, and because he rejected the pompous phrase ology of politicians his public declarations lacked the smooth polish of a Kennedy and the baleful piety of a Lyndon John son. Ike was often ridiculed by his critics for his dangling par ticiples, but he never lost the confidence of the people. Thru- out his eight years in the White House, his critics never suc ceeded in damaging the father- image which he never sought, but which a trusting republic thrust upon him. It is not likely that history will rank him as a great pres ident. But he cannot be den ied a greatness of spirit, a com pleteness of character, and his fulfillment of decency and hon or. His tenure in the White House may prove to be Amer ica’s last grasp at maintaining the orderly principles and trad itions of government and soc iety. There is no mistaking that the standards of the country have grown increasingly differ ent since he left. The fact that conditions have grown increas ingly worse may be testimony that his leadership did possess, after all, a worthiness that Am erica will not fully appreciate until it is too late. r i t tT THEATRE Thursday, Friday Saturday My Side Of The Mountain Teddy Eccles Theodore Bikel Monday, Tuesday Wednesday Heaven With A Gun Glenn Ford Carolyn Jones Thursday, Friday, Saturday Hook, Line And Sinker Jerry Lewis * Peter Lawtord Anne Francis Clover Leaf Friday, Saturday First Run Custer Of The West Robert Shaw Mary Ure Robert Ryan SUNDAY Casino Royale Peter Sellers Ursula Andress The Drive-In will be closed on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for the winter months.
