It is frightening to realize that this country has gotten to such a state of anarchy that our guard forces must take special training to protect citie.' against their own inha!- if ants. It is not surprising, however, that this condition exi'ls, wh"n certain of those whose supposed duty is to teach love and un derstanding, get out in the streets instead and teach vio lence. Attention of the public is invited to a pro gram in existence here for the past 5 years to fill the wak ing horn's with something more pleasant and more construc tive. Those citizens of New berry, oldtimers and newcomers alike, who are not looking for diplomas or degrees, and are not eligible for any federal and tax-supported programs, may yet find what they want and keep their minds alert for the i-mall sum of five dollars per six-weeks’ course which a com mittee of the Colleg ■ Faculty Women’s Club is planning a- gain this fail, starting the first week in October and ending by Thanksgivimr. This program was conceived as a local enterprise six years ago when it became evident that more and more adults were looking for something worthwhile to do in their leis ure hours. Both men and wo men are welcome to participate. There is a wealth of talent in this city; and many of these talented people are generous enough and fully qualified t° teach their skills and share their knowledge with others interested in the same pursuits. Eminent citizens of Newberry as well as members of the College faculty in the past have contributed to this pro gram. It is being coordinated and managed by an interested committee of volunteers and is sponsored by the Newberry College Faculty Women’s club. Information may he obtained by telephoning Mrs. James E. Cummings at 27(5-5820, Mrs. Finis G. Johnson at 27(5-2475, or Mrs. A. G. I). Wile.-> at 270- 2441. Courses have been offered in the past in a very vvid ■ variety of subjects. They havi ranged all the way from hobby courses like bridge, hat-making, di'S.'- making, wood-working, draw ing, embrodiery, knitting, iiird- watchmg, music uppree a: mu, art appreciation, to several sub jects of college level infc'est. Especially popular were courses m “What Everyone Should Know About The Law” and “Interior Designing” recently given. "Modern Maili bur Barents” was eagerly taken by many who did not wan: fhei children to get ahead of them, and to feel helpless when a. ked for help m this new subject. Courses in photography, in ef fective reading, vocabulary, speedwriting and typing, have been highly valued oy those who took them. More intellec tual courses have been given in National Affairs, the Inter national Situation, A Brief history of the Main Religions of The World, as well as cour ses in French and German con versation, whenever native speaking teachers were avail able. On the list of offerings has also been a course of spec ial interest to parents of young children, called Reading With Children,” and several courses pertaining to health and mental health.
