Leaphart and her daughter Miss Dorothy Sease, spent Wednesday and Thursday in Spartanburg as guests of Mrs. Leaphart’s parents. Judge and Mrs. Thomas Sease. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reagln and their son, Earl and Mrs. A. K. Epting of Greenwood spent Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. Gurdon Counts. Mr. Counts had returned home from the Columbia Hospital. Miss Cora Pugh, sudent at Co lumbia College spent the weekend with her grandmother Mrs. J. B. Stockman. Mrs. J. H. McDonough of At lanta, Ga., is visiting her niece, Mrs. George W. Harmon and Dr. Harmon. Capt. Birge Wise of Shaw Air Base, Sumter, visited relatives in Prosperity Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Sease re ceived a telephone call Satur day from their son Major George A. Sease, who had just landed in San Francisco. Major Sease Mrs. Sease, and their two chil dren have been in Okinawa for two years. The Seases will come to Prosperity in two or three weeks for a visit before going to Fort Knox, Ky. wherp Major Sease is to be stationed. Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Hannan spent Sunday in Newberry with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Hawkins and family. Pfc’s Joe and James Dawkins of the Supply Squadron of Mc- Chord Air Force Base at Tacoma Washington spent the past week with their mother, Mrs. John H. Dawkins. This was the only entry from Newberry Coun ty. Billy’s steer, which he carried as a 4-H club project, was bred by Mr. J. Ellerbe Sease. Out of the thirty five animals in the junior show, Billy placed second and his steer was one of the 5 which graded U. S. Prime and were awarded purple ribbons by the judges. The 5 prime steers were pur chased by Colonal Stores for 50 cents per pound, and the buyers promised to send Billy’s steer to the Little Star Store in New berry. It will probable be on sale next week. The Columbia Fat Stock Show has been held each spring for the last 7 years. Members of 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters are eli gible to show In the junior de partment and all farmers are eli gible to show in the senior de partment. NEWBERRY 4-H TIMBER THINNING CONTEST WINNERS Bobby Morse a fifteen year old boy of the Pomaria 4-H Club has Just been declared winner of the 4-H Timber Thinning Contest conducted in the county during the past year by Walter A. Ridge way, Assistant County Agent. Bobby is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Morse of Rt. 1, Po maria, he is in the tenth grade and has been in club work for the past five years. For his pro ject he selected an acre 16 years old loblolly pines * and removed the crowded, crooked and diseas ed trees and left the better trees with room to grow. Approximate ly four cords of wood were cut from the area and a full stand of good quality trees were left. Bobby’s uncle helped with the cutting in return for Bobby’s assistance in the uncle’s woods. First prize for the county was a Parker “51” pen and pencil set and $5.00 in cash. Paul Richardson of the Po maria Club cut with the help of the colored boys on the farm 3% cords of pulpwood from his one acre plot and plans to continue this work until all of the wood lands have been thinned. Paul will receive $6.00 in cash plus an all* purpose pocket knife. Other cash winners were Charles Cromer of the Longlane Club and Moffett Fant, Jr. of the Silver- street Club. “The purpose of the project,” says Mr. Ridgeway, “Is to teach young folks how to care for trees and how to get the best cash re turns from them over the years. The contest has been conducted during the past six years in New berry county and we know we have made some headway in teaching young folks the value of forests”. Prizes were awarded by the Fairfield Forest Products Com pany, a South Carolina subsi diary of the Champion Paper and Fibre Company of Canton, N. C. Judging was done by P. B. Exell, County Agent, and W. J. Barker, forester with Clemson College. Plans are underway for continu ing the project next year. MISS FRENCH CANDIDATE FOR B. A. DEGREE AT CONVERSE Miss Dorothy French, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. French, Walnut street. Newberry, will be a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree at Converse College’s 58th annual commencement on Monday, May 28. Miss French is vice-president of the Saddle Club and vice- president of the I. R. C. Commencement weekend activi ties will include the dedication of the new Converse College Libr ary, recently completed at a cost of $250,000, and will formally open on Alumnae Day, Saturday, May 26. MISS JOHNSON CANDIDATE FOR B. A. DEGREE AT COLUMBIA COLLEGE Miss Thelma Carolyn Johnson of Whitmire will be a candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia College at the College’s 97th annum commencement which will be held on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, May 26-28. JULIUS LINDSEY MEMBER OF NAVAL SERVICE Julius N. Lindsey, Fireman, USN, son pf N. W. Lindsey of Route 1, Chappells is serving aboard the destroyer USS Zellars in the Far East. The ship was active in the support of ground troops in the exacuation at . Hungnam, the Zellars has also been active in shore bombardment of enemy forces. RETURN HOME FROM HOSPITAL Mrs. William C. Armfield, who underwent an emergency major operation in the Newberry Me morial hospital last Friday night, returned to her home, 928 Jessica Avenue Wednesday and is doing nicely. MRS.
