One Year, ... $1.00 Six Months, - - .50 Three Mor tis, - - .25 IN ADVANCE. Wednesday, March 2, 1904. [ I s THE BEST IS CHEAPEST. c Elsewhere in this issue reference is made to the greatly in- . creased sales of fertilizers in this ? State up to March 1st., as i shown by the fertilizer "tag 1 tax," which to that time shows c that 320,000 tons of fertilizers j of all kinds had been sold. s Doubtless the greater bulk of l that enormous quantity is cheap t stuff, such as 13% acid and * kainit, both of which are good so far as they go ; but they are too sterile in the elements that t go to make crops grow, fruit < and mature?that is to say, 1 there is too small a percentage > of the three elements that are essentially necessary for the best results in crops of all kinds, i viz., phosphoric acid, nitrogen c (or ammonia) and potash. i It should be apparent to all 1 that 200 pounds to the acre of t a fertilizer containing 10 per cent of phosphoric acid, 4 of nitrogen and 4 of potash would ( be just as valuable to the crop g as 400 pounds per acre of a fer- s tilizer containing only half of t thoso percentages, and that the v stronger fertilizer is cheaper be- ? cause there is less freight on it \ in proportion to strength, and ( there is less labor in hauling and distributing the higher grades than the lower in order j to get the same percentages of , the fertilizing elements. . In view of these facts (and a they are unimpeachable facts) t we believe the cheapest all r round fertilizer the farmer can t use is Peruvian guano. The percentages of the valuable elements in this fertilizer are high, being 20^ phosphoric acid and 4 per cent each of ammonia and potash. An analysis made by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture shows materially higher percentages of each of these elements, as does also an analysis made bv the ir > ? - " 1 mussucijwHeus Agricultural Uol-1 iege. The following extract from,' I'rof. E. I>. Voorhees, Director J of the New Jersey ExperimentiJ Station, will bo road with inter-; [ est by those interested in tlie J?, question of fertilizers: "Of the guanos, the product'* obtained trom Peru, or from the't inlands off the coast it thatj lountrv, i- the richest in nitro-' I N t i ten. It is derived almost en irely from the excrement of set nrds, as well as irom the remains >f the birds themselves. Tht imposition of this guano is ol i very complex character. Tht litrogen exists largely as ammo 11 a, combined with oxalates irates, humates, sulphates, phos lhates, carbonates, and to somt xtent in purely organic forms n these forms the Nitrogen it |uickly available, and marvelom 'esults are obtained front iti ise. The distinctive value o! lie natural guanos is due to the act that the nitrogen in a num >er of differently soluble com lounds, which becomes avaib ible at different times in tht oil, and thus constantly feed (lit dant with this element. It it lometimes argued that becaust if the very great value of gua. ion, which consists very largely if the excrement of sea fowls Iroppings of pigeons and of do nestic towls should also possess i high value and for this reasoi i fictitious value has been fixec in these manures. These pro lucts differ very materially frotr tatural Guanos, and it is dut irobably both to the the charicter of the food eaten by th< lomestic fowl and to the differ mt methods by which the food ii ibtained. The biids producing he Guanos feed largely on fish i high nitrogenous food, result ng in an excrement richer ii his element than that from tin lomestic bird, feeding largely or vegetable matter; and, besides he former were accumulated ii i hot, dry climate, which quick y absorbs the moisture contain ?d in fresh droppings, thus leav ng it in a much dryer state. The fertilizer "tag tax'' up t< uaren i?t "lis year is $22,00* nore than that for the sami >eriod last year, which was itsel i record breaker.
