THE BEST IS CHEAPEST. c
Elsewhere in this issue reference
is made to the greatly in- .
creased sales of fertilizers in this ?
State up to March 1st., as i
shown by the fertilizer "tag 1
tax," which to that time shows c
that 320,000 tons of fertilizers j
of all kinds had been sold. s
Doubtless the greater bulk of l
that enormous quantity is cheap t
stuff, such as 13% acid and *
kainit, both of which are good
so far as they go ; but they are
too sterile in the elements that t
go to make crops grow, fruit <
and mature?that is to say, 1
there is too small a percentage >
of the three elements that are
essentially necessary for the
best results in crops of all kinds, i
viz., phosphoric acid, nitrogen c
(or ammonia) and potash. i
It should be apparent to all 1
that 200 pounds to the acre of t
a fertilizer containing 10 per
cent of phosphoric acid, 4 of
nitrogen and 4 of potash would (
be just as valuable to the crop g
as 400 pounds per acre of a fer- s
tilizer containing only half of t
thoso percentages, and that the v
stronger fertilizer is cheaper be- ?
cause there is less freight on it \
in proportion to strength, and (
there is less labor in hauling
and distributing the higher
grades than the lower in order j
to get the same percentages of ,
the fertilizing elements. .
In view of these facts (and a
they are unimpeachable facts) t
we believe the cheapest all r
round fertilizer the farmer can t
use is Peruvian guano. The
percentages of the valuable elements
in this fertilizer are high,
being 20^ phosphoric acid and
4 per cent each of ammonia and
potash. An analysis made
by the Pennsylvania Department
of Agriculture shows materially
higher percentages of
each of these elements, as does
also an analysis made bv the

irobably both to the the charicter
of the food eaten by th<
