Investigation Resumed. Columbia. June 14 ?The penitentiary investigating committee resumed its work here yesterday. The feature of the pension was the receipt of a letter from Senator Tillman. Among the matters inquired into was a report that Josh Ashley h id stab'ed his horse in trie penitentiary during one seesiuu of the legislature. Mr. Stevenson a?ked whether it was true thet officers of the penitentiary of a hither trade had to pay part of rhpir salary to Ool. Neal in consideration of re ceivint an appointment. lie said it was not true as to himself and he didn't believe there was any thing in it a* to the others. A letter wa? read hv Chairman Stevenson from Senator Ti liman in reference to brick, commissary supplies urid farm accounts, brought out in former evidence. In it he says he deems it unnecessary to appear before the com mittee to answer about such trivial matters, and sends the letter in lien thereo*". lie mold no' see how Col. Seal's derelictions could be charged to him. He said he never had any commissary sup plies charged to him during his term of ofiice as governor and he could not understand how such thlllf'U o ?. ? - "" 4 - , . nwtj i<j njiprai till lllf books. Ho had paid for the few things fie trot, but hail probably received a few rness of vegetables from Col. Ne < 1 is a compliment. He said bo had never farmed while in Columbia in any true of the term. He rented four or five aore?, planted oats on it, uting his carriage horses, and afterwards planted peas for the fodder The little piece of ground about the mansion had been planted by convicts s"nt to repair about the mansion and the assisted in hauling and cutting the stuff from the rented land Me said the committee could calm late the cost of that. He saiil that f<?l. Xeal had offered him some bricl; as a pres ent while they Acre at lio- R Hill, if he would pay the freight, which he agreed to do. Afterwards a bill was sent him by Lips comb and when lie wrote Xeal about it, he said "never mind ? it's all right." Col. Xeal did ship him some oats and ho had frequently asked for the bill, but never got any. He accepted from Neal a deHk made at the penitentiary, but he didn't think he was imposing on him since Neal owed him, for a null he had sold him. tie said he had no idea that such small matters would receive so much consideration, except that that newspapers made so much out of them for their own purposes. He said if the state had A r . lost anything by bim in these transactions he was willing to pay I it, bat be wanted an itemized 4 statement. He repeatod, in a let- g ter to the chairman, that he knew nothing of any charges against " him on the pententiary books and 4 said that any use could be made 4 of his letter the committee desir- ^ ed. He rather insinuated that ? ' J such small matters were magni- j ^ 1 fied for political capital. Mr. Westfield will look over i his books and get up the itemized j statement as to commissary supplies. It is alleged that about $75 stand against the senator. A letter was read from Con gressraan Latimer about the ' bookcase he got. He said he j agreed to pay for it and frequent' ly asked for the bill, but Colonel Neal never sent it. The case was made for his wife and he had no , 1 idea of getting it for nothing. A Card of ThanltM.
