SKVKKK BATTLE FOUGHT i the Philippines on Tuesday, Juno i:L The American troops stirred up le of the liveliest engagements the war in the Philipines. The jhting raged from daylight until irk. The American field guns *re engaged in the first artillery ip! against a Filipino battery ncealed in the jungle. Two mpanies of the twenty-first fantrv were nearly surrounded ' a large body of insurgents, but e Americans cut their way out ith heavy loss. The United States turret ship onadnock and the gunboats elena and Zeafiro trained their itteries on Bakoor and the rebel Bnches near Las l'inas all the orning. Bakoor was once on e and the natives stopped the iread of the flames. Home made mister loaded with nails was led by the insurgeants. Their looting was most acurate and inaiderable damage was done. Ah soon as the fighting opened e Americans were attacked by dden riflemen on all sides, even e amigos, or "friendly" natives the houses of the town shootg into their rear. ENEMY WELL ORGANIZED. The Filipino force engaged ap iars 10 nave neen Uie largest id best organized body of men hich has met our troops. The Americans are compelled advance along narrow roads id over small bridges cotnmanid by earthworks ten feet thick. The only means of crossing the mote was by a small bridge hich the Filipinos comman id with trenches spreading V aped, whence they could conntrate their fire on the bridge, ley also had the advantage of e trees and jungle so the Amerans cou'd hardly see ahead. When the battle was resumed 1 o'clock with the reinforeeents. our battery having sineed the enemy's guns, the merman's wading waist deep in e mud of the salt tlats, slowly ul pouring steady volleys of usketry at the rebels, drove eir opponents beyond the river. ' RAPID FIRE" FOR THREE HOI KS When the two armies lay fac g each other across the deep ream, the enemy, practically it of sight while the men in bine id khaki lay in the mud and ishes, many of them without elter, for three hours, without a ement's cessation in the firing, Hired bullets at the enemy as st as they could load. But, thanks to the poor marksmanship of the rebels, the loss was not as great as if the Filipinos had shot straight. MKN HKHAVK1) IIANDHOMKI.Y. Ail artny lias seldom fought under a greater handicap or more courageously than did our regulars, a majority of whom were, comparatively speaking, recruits, who could have been pardoned for retiring in the face of such a tierce lire Ironi their exposed positions. The Fourteenth regiment lay to the right of the bridge and in front of them was the Twelfth regiment, with the Ninth on the right and the Twenty-first up the road facing the bridge, which was the key to trie situation. On the bridge were the bodies of the amici ivan.i n nu iiau ai ic in pieu IU rusil across and many wounded men were carried from the open ground before the bridge. After tiring in volleys for a short time tlie Americans were ordered to tire when and where they could see the enemy. It was everything for himself and the best our men could do was to aim at the mist made by the smokeless powder. After silencingthe big gun at Cavite Viejo, the gunboats ran close along the shore, bombarding the rebel position. The rebels replied with rilie tire and with the tire of some small pieces of artillery. So vigorous was the enemy's tire that at 0.20 a. m , the gunboat Helena joined the small gunboats already named and the Princeton, Montery and Monadnock from their anchorages, dropped occasional big shells among the rebels. This, apparently, only served to incite the rebels as they kept up an incessant tire of musketry and artillery near the mouth of the Zanote river two north of l!?i coor.
