J HUMAN HONKS ON CREEK \\ HANK. b A White Man and Negro Boy Ar- (1 rested for Assassination of Oil- b bert Cross, a White Hoy. y t Special lo The State. Yorkville, May 19.?The find- n ing near a creek's bank in JBul- ? lock's Creek township last week of a portion ot the skeleton of a human hand has created excite- ^ ment by the neighborhood and ^ caused thejarrest of Sam Childers, y white, and A1 Freemster, a negro. They were committed to jail to- ^ day pending further investipa. ft tion. ft The story of the sensation dates back to last February. Childers, e who is a shady character, had under his control a Utrnv iwhita lw? who went by the name of Gilbert ^ Cross and a bound negro boy ? named A1 Freemster. About .'the 18th of February * Feemster was charged with theft. v The people who made the charge I1 were relying on the evidence of 1 Gilbert Cross. On the next day, 1 Sunday, Cross disappeared, but the fact did not develop publicly v until Monday, when Childers was * taken before a magistrate for a s preliminary examination. A1 ? Freemster, who is somewhat ^ weak minded, stated that he and Childers had killed Cross on the 6 day before and buried the body 11 in a ditch. He subsequently re- 11 versed his statemeut, but as the * result of it a strict search was in- 8 a ti vu tvvi In answer to questions, Childers " claimed that on the day before he * had induced Cross to leave the neighborhood and go to North v Carolina. lie stated that it was c Cross who was guilty of the theft ^ that was being investigated, and p it was on that account that he v had advised Cross to run away. c The people hunted the country f over without getting the slightest 1 clue and the whereabouts of the 1 missing boy. " Childers was convicted of the J theft?petty larceny?paid his ^ fine and went free. The aiTair ^ blew over for the time and uoth- j ing more was heard from it until the past few days. On Wednesday of last week, t Mr. John Mcllwain picked up a j short distance from Bullock's t creek a rather peculiar looking fragment of a skeleton. Lie thought he had found the skele- g ton of a fox's foot and others dis- r agreed with him, believing that t it was probably the foot of a dog. 1 The thing was a subject of dis- ? cussion for several days until Mr, j, T. C., WEDNESDAY7 keleton looked to him very much ke that of a human hand. The 5inta of bone'were taken to Bulick'n Creek church next day and he matter was laid before three hysicians. Drs. Kope, Hood and rawley. Each of them unhesitaingly gave the opinion that the ones were those ot a human and. . _ Following the opinion of the octors theory began to revert ack to the disappearance of ]( ouog Cross, and again the coun ry was scoured for furthpr rp. iains. Nothing else developed \\ xeept that on Thursday one of " he searchers picked up near the ti reek bank a brogan shoe that j' bowed evidence of exposure to o rater and weather, and which J\' ad been worn and patched, tl Witnesses identified the shoe as <1 eing very similar to those worn w y Cross when last seen alive, and s the outcome of it all Ohilders nd Feemster were again arrestd.J At a preliminary examination n yesterday but little could be otten out of Feemster. Childers epeated the story he told on the 0 ormer occasion and claimed jj hat Cross was not only alive and '1 rell in North Carolina, but that d le can be produced. All the same v t was deemed best to commit c he two men to jail. Dr. W. A. Hood was in York- ^ ille this morning and had with ( dm the suspicious section of ^ keleton. It consists of that part jj f the left hand from wrist to gl :nuckles. There are four finger w lAnoo O o I- 1 unco nuu a uiuiiiu uoue, or rainr bones that correspond to these tl uembers. The thumb bone is r; ot in as good state of preservaion as is the otheas. This fact ^ trengthens the theory as to iden- v ity. There are witnesses who a ay positively that Cross's left hurnb was deformed. j. Citizens of the neighborhood c /ho have given most study to q ase say that if it is a fact that n )ross was really murdered, it is robable that his body was V weighted and thrown into the reek. They think it was then trobably carried some distance n time ot high water. The bones " n question were found within ? * J] bout 100 yards of what is known ^ n the neighborhood as the "shalow ford," and it. is believed that hey were probably carried away s rom the creek bank by a dog. 'eople who live in the immediate vicinity |say they remember 9 if seeing a flock of buzzards near Si S he shallow ford some time back, >ut they did not go to see what he buzzards were after. The people of the neighborhood ire still very much excited and ire hard at work building theoies and collecting evidence. Uncle Joshua moved among them filled with untold joy and pride, as he beheld the company of his own large household. He has been certainly greatly blessed by the Lord, as regards his family. Not only has he been spared to length of days, honor and love, but spared to see three generations of his own family. 1 here are to-day living 109 children, grand-children and great grandchildren. There were 106 gathered there at the re union. Among such a large number, and so many families only 8 have been called away by the Lord. The day was spent in conversation and etrolling about the old homestead. A bountiful dinner was served in the yard, provided by his children to which special attention was paid by all present. In the afternoon the crowd gradually dispersed each declairiug and feeling that they had spent a pleasant, and profitable day. The fami lies represented ?ere: Messrs J. Fletcher Carnes, J.
