Stuff Correspondence State. Augusta, Ga., Af?ril 19.?The Second South Carolina volunteer infantry was mustered out of per vice here today, according to the schedule made ihree weeks ago. Three paymasters began work at 10 o'clock and the work was all i iMiijnciru in nvu nours, and itic majority of the men on their way to their homer. The Atlantic Coast Line, via Qrangeburg and Sumter, ran a special train besides its regular | passenger train, and took away probably hall the regiment. The men received in the neighbor hood of *40,000. | A majority of the lieutenants land the field and stall' officers I were paid, but captains and other I officers who had receipted to Uncle Sam will get nothing till accounts are audited and found correct. Last night 40 or 50 soldiers paraded around camp, beating | tin pans and exhibiting enthusiasm. This was kept up till very late. Nothing but good temper was shown. Two big camp lires were burned all night. Up to the lime of leaving here this evening the South Carolina ex soldiers behaved themselves in a very creditable manner. No complaint has been made by the provost guard, the only arrest being a man who had his coat unbuttoned. The special train on the Coast Line took Orangeburg contingent and the colonel and stafF, who were invited to attend a banquet in that town tonight. Vour companies of the Second South Carolina regiment marched from the fair grounds to Shandon in Columbia, May 21st last. The dates of enlistment for most of the men being May 5th, in 15 days these men would have been in the service one ve.ir the nr. ^anization, tho independent or first huttailion, being the first from the State for the war with Spain. One company was taken from it to fill the first regiment, the battalion being filled a second time June 15th. It was commanded till August 23d, when the Second regiment was organized, by Maj. Henry T. Thompson, who then became lieutenant colonel, second in command to Col. Jones. On September 15th we went to Jacksonville, October 22d, to Savannah, and January 3d to Cuba, returning here three weeks ago. In that time nearly 30 men have died of disease. In .Jacksonville as many as 300 men were on the sick books at tho same time. While the service for some months has been a drag on officers and men, it was with feelings of regret that tho members H ElS ?EIMI-WEIEIKL^V. , S. C., SATURDAY, I of the regiment parted. Friendships have been forme I 1>etween officers and men tha will be life lasting. They hav not had the opportunity of stand ing together under a canopy c smoke, but they volunteered t meet the fortunes of war, an would have done their duty ii Carolinians have done be Ion had opportunity presented itsel The soldiers were of the kin who can stand lighting bette than thek monotony of camp lift The men ol at least one eaptai came to him this morning an said that if he "got to go" to fh Philippines to call on them.
