The IIudsolt River was frozen over at Yonkers, near New York, for the first tine in tweity years. A number of vessels Were h1emm1111ed in by ice in tihe harbor, a very serious matter, as every day's leiay costs a coastwise vessel five hundred dollars, and one bouiid for Europe, a thouisand dollars. GovmINoi Scm-soN has appointed Senator A. 11. Butler, of Aiken, filsh Commissioner for the State. This is one of the feIw offices to which no salary attaches. Colonel Butler's first official act, will be to stock the rivers in upper South Carolina with four hundred thousand young Call fornia salmon, prescuted to the State by the fish commissioner of M.ary land. A'r A GE1NIRAL clection held in France oi Sunday (such elections are always held oin Sunday) the Re publicaus gained control of the Sen ate, which inat always been monarchi cal in its tendencies. The Assembly is also Republican by a large inajori ty. Political prophets say that tho Prince in perial and the Bourbons had better now betake themselves to sonic other occupation than that or waiting for the Frenlclh throne. It won't pay. 'TIl SoNTORIA elect ion in North Carolina is (irawing near, and much excite-nmt prevails. Pools are sold every night, with Vance in the lead, Mrrinon second and the field scarce ly anywhere. Great fears are enter tained that Vance and Merrinion will defeat each other and let a third man slip in. A North Carolina paper says that Nriice is tihe choice of every Southern newspaper outside of his own State, as lhe is of most of those in it. Ti.: Surni. Couirr of the United States bas just affirmed thle constitu tionality of the laws passed by Con gress to prlevent polygamnly, find the Court holds that th Mormons cannot dodge these laws Oil the plea of religious belief. Every Mormoin Saint can now be put in the penitch tiary' for bigamy, and as Utah Terri tory is very fertile it is not unlikely that tihe "Gentiles" will root out the follovers of Brigham Young and possess the rich tields themselves. This offers a new ground for the canrpet-b)aggers. lUrris il caAuJ' srs are maki.ng a proposition to fund the entire debt of the State of' Vir'gnia ait four' per cent. Virginia is the most involved of all the Stales in the UJnion. She owes over thirty mail lions of dollars, be sides accrued interest, and the rec pudiation feelbnig has been veiry strongr though the deb)t paiyers are lit p)resenlt in thme asendency. If Virginia, in her dreafl predicament, has auny show of' obtaining such favorable teris, it seems phtini that South Caro(linia couIld do as much if the debt qumestioni were onice settled. Under thre Consolidation comp~romnise, cour debt will be redunced to about $7,200, 000, at six Per' cent. interest. Once aIssuire cap)italists that this debt will be0 paid, and they will doubtless agree to fund it at four per cent., thus virtu ally scaling the dlebt dowvn one-third, and making the entire interest on thme ddbt not quitec three hundred thou sandl dollars. 'This wouldl efl'ect pIretically the same endl as the re pud(iationmists have in view, and in a manner much moure satisfactory to all parties. As long, however, as the wrangling over' the debt continues, no aid can be sought for from wvithout. The Adulteration of Syrup. In this issue willl be found an article oni the adult.oration of syrup, whimch Is wall calculated to make a man after reading It hurry to the nearest dentist and have his "sweet tooth" extracted forthwithi. If half of what Is charged be true, no wonder peoplo suffer from dyspebsia. This thing of sitting dowvn to breakfast, calling for buck wheat cakes made of wheat shorts, buttering themi with oleomargarine, spreading over them a mixture of starch, sniphuric acid, copperas and limo, and masticating themn with a set of porcelain teet.h, beats the old feat of spelling "bonny clabber wvithout a b" nll hollow, and makes one yearn for an india rubber esophagus and a double back acting forty horse power cojper lined digestive apparatus. Charles Francis Adams, Jr., has resIgned his position as a government diretor of the Union Paicifll Raliroad Company. GENERAL 008811 A brakeman named Opdyke was frozen to death on Friday whilo run ning on a Central Railroad freight train from Easton to Elizabeth, N. J. A man is also reported frozen on the North Pennsylvania freight while going over the Central division. Gen. Grant qrrived In Dublin on Friday morning, accompanied by Minister Noyes. le was met by the Lord Mayor, and was presented with the freedom of the City of Dublin. He visted the public institutions and other places of interest. There was no public demonstration. The Chineso question was briefly diRcessed at the last Cabinet meeting, and in acoordance with the reco, amon dation of the concurrent resolution adopted by the Senate and House of Representatives at the last session, it was decided that the secretary of State should open formal ne4otiations with the Chinese government for a lloditcation of' the Burlingame treaty with a view to placing restriction's upon Chinese immigration to this country. Noah Williams and Madoc Gainey, of Green county, Indiana, made ar rangements to break into the store of Watts Bond, at Oakland, forty miles south of Terre Haute, on Thursday night. A number of citizens having been informed of the intended burg lary, awaited the arrival of the thieves in a saloon near Bond's store, in which the lights had beoa extinguished. The )urglars visited the saloon to obtaiu liquor bofore going to work, when the citizens opened fire upon them. Over thirty shots were exchanged. Wil liams was shot through the ,neck and killed, and ("ainloy was wounded in the breast and will probably die. A citizen named Norton was shot in the face by the thieves and was slightly hurt. Wii f lie robbers was captured a set. of' flue burglars' tools. NEW GOODS ! CHEAIL GOODS! GOOD GOODS MESSRS. J. F.
