At the close of the performance in the New Amsterdam theatre, New York City, crowds of women hurried to see Mrs. George Gould leave the house. When Mrs. Gould and her husband reached the carriageway they/ found scores of these women awaiting them. Now. there was no intention on the part of any of these women to be of fensive* Few of them probably were excited by a desire to do homage to wealth. All were moved by the natur al and by no means deplorable passion for a sight of the recent novelty in feminine apparel, namely, Mrs. Gould’s suspenders. Mrs. Gould, we are told, wore a “black jetted net,” made with a high girdle and suspender straps. A white lace ruffled guimpe, with elbow sleeves, long white gloves and a black jet turban with aigrette, completed her costume. Man will he interested only In a passing way in the high girdie. the guimpe, and the aigrette. TJis mind will be concentrated, however, on the suspenders, for those will servo to remind him that woman has left him Iktlo or nothing to wear ttmt he can now claim exclusively as his own. Tong ago she reached for his thick- soled shoos, and although she has tbing them aside, temporarily, she is likely to pick them up again at any minute. Then she bifurcated her skirt Then she took up his waistcoat. Then sh« put on his shirt. Then she ap propriated his standing collar. Final ly, having donned his derby hat. she sauntered forth after new adventures. And now. judging by her interest in Mrs. Gould’s experiment, she is going to put on his suspenders. Not by confiscating his clothes has woman in these latter days exhibited a disposition to rob man of bis birth right. They tell us that she is using his slagg and smoking his cigars. She has snatched from him his exclusive right to club life; she takes his job away from him If she wants to, and she elbows him in the walks of life in which he was foolish enough to think at one time ho was supreme. What is there left for him, now that she has captured his suspenders? Very little. If she could only learn to step forward when getting off a street j car, mans Inferiority to her would be | established forever. A Widower’s Susceptibility. (Washington Post.) A widower is a tame animal and stands without tying. No woman can scare him. He is over-confident, and that is his great weakness. He has been through it all, and is not to be caught a second time. He feels im-1 pervious to the approaches of woman j in any form or guise. The widow | finds him really a rather knotty prob lem. He presents difficulties that are! wholly absent in a man who has never felt the matrimonial halter. He looks upon the widow with amused indiffer ence. But a young and attractive wo man who has never been married quickly arouses his sympathies. He, in nine cases out of ten, shows re markable endurance of her selge of his heart, and we all know it is but: a step from endurance to pity, and thence to embraces. His doom is quickly sealed.
