Benjamin Ryan Tillman has been re fracted to us as a ravening lion st Hid ing on an eminence with jaws distend ed and ready ‘o spring: but ail bL terrors have steadily diminished as he has slowly come towards us. until through personal contact we find him endowed with all the airs which win affection. The contrast between the real Tillman and the ideal Tillman is startlit. . We gravely ask: Can it be that this is the blue-ribbon fire- eater of the land o’ cotton, or has his vehement character been but tempor arily calmed by bis sojourn in a com munity whore motions are pacific and vl' virtue- are still greater than its vie ?, Gil* t> -the contrary not withstanding? We do not believe that Benjamin has been half so bad as he has been painted and we challenge the assertion that he ever held a pitchfo-h in his hand beyond the area of his Elbert, S. C., farm. It would help matters along amazingly if the rest of the Palmetto citizenship could come up here and abide with us for a while. We need that sort of com mingling in our business as a nation. The best politics for the North and the South is the get-together politics, and don’t forget it. 1905 The Dispensary Fight in Asheville. The dispensary campaign reached an acute stage in Asheville Monday when the editor of The Qazetts News was threatened with a liber • suit by Senator Chas. A. Webb, lea 1- er of the dispensary forces, because of an editorial Saturday in which Mr. Webb and Mr. Murphy were severely arraigned and charged with dupiicitj. The paper was given the alternative of retracting the statement or stunn ing a libel suit. Monday aiteinoon the paper offered as evidence for its charge the statements oi Fru"K Loughran, proprietor of the Mote:, ierkeley; P. H. Branch, proprieto-of the Swannanoa Hotel, and R. .1. Siiei rill, a former alderman and at pres ent a local distiller. These gentle men declared that they were assure: by Mr. Webb and Mr. Murphy tha' the liquor traffic of Asheville would be left alone, and also cfeclared that the State senator and representative had broken faith. Both Mr. Mu phy and Mr. Webb made statements Mon day afternoon declaring that they had made no promises. The dispensary fight is the hottest contest ever waged in Asheville. Both sides are claiming that they will win on April dth. Much personality and much per sonal feeling has been injected into the campaign, and the conservative "lenient is longing for the fight to end.
