There is not much doink in the “jug line'’ just now. • • • Saturday was “All Fools day”—and the Spartanburg Herald says there is no fool like an April fool. • • • Farmers of Cherokee, once more we say to you—raise enough home sup plies for yonr own use and a little more to sell to your city friends. Home raised meat tastes better to us than Western meat. We want the county to be self supporting along this line. * * * Come in and sign that petition against the opening of the Jenkins distillery in Cherokee township. Let us show the Hoard of Control that we mean what we say in regard to whis key in Cherolfoe. Don’t put the mat ter off but come in right, away and sign the petition. • • • Pressure of advertising compels us to issue another eight-page paper today. Our readers must not think this is a permanent thing. We simply mean to print a paper large enough to accommodate the advertisers with out encroaching upon the news feat ure of the paper. Gee! but the people are getting a whole lot for their money when they get a paper like The Ledger twice a week for $1.00 a year. * * • Last week we received a letter from a fellow newspaper worker in which he used the following language: “The time was when l used to think I would fight everybody and every thing, hut I have found that it pays to he broad and liberal.” That’s the way to talk. This world is too big for any man to be wrapped up in his own conceit. The Ledger realizes that fact more and more every day. Other people have rights that should be respected. There was a time when we also thought it the proper thing to fight everybody that did not think as wo did. We have passed that point, and the ever increasing busi ness of this enterprise is ample dem onstration of the fact that our/ later course is the proper one. * * * Somehow or other we dislike the idea of buying goods away from home when it is possible to buy them at home. A clothing drummer came through here not long ago and took enough orders for clothes to run a first-class clothing house a month. We did not buy any for the reason that we prefer to buy from our local merchants. The foreign man paid no license, no store rent, nor hired no clerk. True, he had a hotel bill and hail to pay railroad fare. But we submit it is not the proper thing to give your orders for clothing, or any thing else, to an itinerant when you can buy it from a local merchant at probably a less price and thus enable him to stay in business. It is not only doing the local merchant, an injustice but yourself and your town a wrong. * * * There are some who oppose the pro hibition law from the fact that it takes life out of the town. We overheard a man remark last Saturday that he had not been to Gaffney before in three weeks just because whiskey was hard to get and that ifc was here then from the fact that the need of provisions made it necessary for him to come. That is just the state of af fairs that is desired. There should be no immoral institution or attract ions in a city or town that will tempt men to come to town when they have no other business but to lounge around these places until they are either taken to their homes or locked in the guard house. It seem strange that men who are ciulet, law-abiding ctiizens while sober would indulge In the excessive use of strong drink when they know it will not only cause them to do things contrary to all morality and decency but will actu- allv place them under the clutches of the law. • • « We have purposely refrained from saying anything to reflect upon our neighbors, the Cherokee News, for they have been very clever to us and wo appreciate their good graces. They must not think that we mean,any re flection on them when we pat our self on the back because of our cir culation. They have a good paper with a large circulation and are a clever set of gentlemen who deserve all the business they can got. We sin cerely wish them well. In our state ments concerning our circulation we are careful to adhere to the facts, and it's no reflection on them when we say we have a larger paid-in-advance circulation in Cherokee county than any other newspaper in the Fifth Con gressional District of South Carolina, j To say otherwise would not he true. Besides, it would reflect upon the ia- telligence of the people of the county to even suppose that we did not reach the largest number of people when wo give so much more than does any other paper for the money. This is not written in a spirit of unkindness at all. Let The News get all the bus- j ness it can. We are not jealous. We are dong fairly well and are getting the money for what we do. so in the name of common sense why shrould we be dissatisfied? We don’t expect or want it all. We want to see The News do well and are willing (as they have been to us) to help them at any time. There was a time when we didn't feel this way, but we have learned better. Now, don’t let us have any quarrel over this matter at all, I but if you take issue in the statement we mak<i, appoint your man and we will appoint ours, and these two can appoint the third and we will let them go to work and present the re- i suit of their labors to the public.
