Best, a prominent mer chant of Barnwell, was shot and killed by an unknown per son, within fifty yards of the Barnwell court house, last Wed nesday night. Forty negroes have been arrested as suspects. Scott Madison, one of the ne groes arrested, was tried and convicted for the killing. He was tried Monday-less than a week after the killing- and sen tenced to die in the electric chair between December 19 and 22.
