A INLAND WATERWAY VVOUD AID CONWAY (Continued from Page 1.) chief of engineers, in one of his reports on the waterway betweon Georgetown and Charleston pointed out, the work was being done on too small a scale and that we should ask for more and do more. As to the portion of the route between Georgetown and Wilmington, no work has been done except the improvement of the Waccamaw river from Conway to Georgetown. This' portion of the river has been improved for a twelve foot channel I ~ p < > ) We have j nice line i j Men's and ! llnrlnnifAii | UIIUGIVfCdl most anyl | THESE GOODS ARE I CAN SUIT ANYBODY. From j Conway north to Wilmington there' are several routes, but all follow the Waccamaw river for several miles.1 The project adopted by the' Board, of Engineers follow the river to Bear Bluff and there goes into a high level canal to Little River Inlet, thence up the coast to Cape" Fear river. The war came on and this work was properly aband- i oned, but we think that it should now be taken up and the project as a whole carried to completion. Wo i have seen that the railroads of our country are not capable of taking' care of the trade and the./ therqjt; stives have asked that water transportation he encouraged. The upper Waccamaw river flows1 through a fertile valley and some of the best farming lands of the state are found there. The town of Little River is i but four miles from Wortham'sl Bridge, a point on the river- 48. miles above Conway, and is 23 1-2' miles from the nearest rail mad station. All of the points on the river are in the same position, as the river parallels the coast and tlv raih-oad runs almost due north from Conway. There is now practically a four foot channel from Conway to Red Bluff 25 miles and thence to Wortham's Bridge only about a two foot channel at low water. All this data can be had from the Charleston Engineer's office from its survey of the river in 1909-1911. We respectfully suggest that instead of merely improving the Waccamaw river between Conway and | Bear Bluff, the project should be i extended to Wortham's Brige, which j is 20 miles further up the river.
