IMPROVKJVtKNT. | ? BY MISS liKTTI K IIAHUKLSON, ( 1 [Continued from Last Week. > across the road opposite the school * house. Then teacher and pupils { went to work. The boys brought < axes and saws and during noon hours ( cut down the trees and sawed them up in suitable lengths for the saw mill in the afternoon. After school was over for the clay, the boys took a team of mules and a log cart furnished by one of the trustees and hauled the logs to the saw, mill. The sawyer told the boys if they would come and bear off the lumber for him he would saw it for them without charging them anything. A day was set, it being on Saturday so that the boys would not have to miss a day from school. The boys met at the mill on the day set and the timber was all sawed and hauled back to the school grounds by the boys. Spades where then brought out and three or four of the largest boys dug holes and put up the post ready for wire. In the meantime the other hoys, teacher and girls were supplied with brooms, hoes, rakes, pitch folks and a hand cart and all worked for thirty or forty minutes in the yard each day. The tools were placed in the school room at night. In a short time we had a half aero square just as clean \ as hoes and rakes and brooms could . \naVe-fC ^Cd now perfectly J clean and the post reao^- wiro The teacher again aswoC> *'ie i patrons out to help stretch the wu'C; j they came with a wiro stretcher and (" with the help of the boys soon had . the fence completed, except two gates, so they were made by two of the boys. Teacher and pupils then brought several hundred hills of ( boar grass, which has a- very pretty ? white llower, from an old field near by and set out a row, hillsabout two feet apart, all around the half acre square. Twenty-five rose bushes were planted, lillios and many other t kinds of flowers were set out. Thir- r ty-five shade trees were added to the ^ yard. Honey suckles and ivy vines c were planted to climb o\er trelles ,? made by the boys. A large bed of y chrysanthemums, jonquils, piney for- r est and daffodils were tastefudy ar- j ranged by the girls. Then each girl . prepared a llower pot or hanging [ basket for the poach and window? Wo have had excellent success witl everything we have planted, onh two trees have died. (2).
