U BSC HI IT ION ON K DOLLAR PKR YKAR H, H, WOODWARD, lCriitor THURSDAY, APRIL 16 1008. The Herald has passed another mile stone in its life. With this '.ssue it enters upon the 22nd year of its existence. During its life it has watched with a jealous eve the development of Conway from a strug- 1 gling and hopeless Horo into a prosperous and magnificent little city. It has seen the wheels of progress revolve time and again, bringing , with each revolution new hopes, new I aspirations and new development to 1 Horry and her peoplo. It has seen ! the waste places made productive by ( persevering and intelligent cultiva- l lion. It has soon her young men < and young women enter the;tragedy ' of life upon the stage of action and work out their own destiny under far morevfavorable circumstances 1 and more propitious environment < than did their fathers and mothers It has seen them go out from the old roof tree to carve for themselves l a name and position in the atTairs of i men, and it has seen the most of them win honor, and powo?* and sue- | cess from the tickle Dame. All these j things has it secn'and it rejoices that today Horry holds a proud position ' among her sister counties in patriotism, in art, literature, religion, agriculture, thrift, industry, in fact all < the departments of life the pursuit of which go to make up a happy and contented citizenship. Hut itis not to the successes and failures of the yesterdays that the Herald would point on this the anniversary of its birth. With them wo have only to do as pleasant memories of what has been accomplished by Horry's brain and brawn and as an incentive to work for greater things for the development of our resources and the improvement of our material and moral condition. There is nns sibilties of more enlarged development awaiting us as a people and individuals as the days come and go, and it takes neither a prophet nor a son of a prophet to seo them. Our soil is rich and fertile, a large per cent, in a virgin state, and is adapttcd to the cultivation of almost eve ry plant which grows in the bosom of mother earth; our resources are practically unlimited and varied and the passing of turpoutino makes it possible for other industries and enterprises to spring up, thrive and grow; our climato is supurb, salubrious and healthy, and the moral atmosphere of Horry will compare favorably with that of any other plpce on God's green footstool We are indeed a blessed people and surrounded by the richest gifts from the great storehouse of liberal nature, and all that is necessarv for us to profit by the gifts the gods have given us is to apply the art of man to the material of nature and by application, industry and frugality success will crown our efforts. Tho Herald is glad to see that the interest in the organization of the lire company has been revived and a meeting to this end was held in the Council chamber last Friday night. The recent fire here demonstrated beyond peradventure, even to the frivilous and tho doubtingThomases, the efficiency of the engine in lighting the progress of the flames. It is useless to rehash the scenes of that morning. They are familiar to tho entire population of Conway and all join in one accord in ascribing honor to the lire laddies for checking the flames where they did and preventf il * ingi, nern irom Doing more disastrous to property than they were. But notwithstanding this, and we don't think we can rightly be charged with a lack of appreciation whon we say it, that there was much confusion growing out a want of organization. The officers of the company felt this and the few remaining members of the old organization were aware ot it. But now that new interest has been taken In the organization and thirty or thirty-five of our stalwart young men have breathed new life and new blood into it. we think we are safe in saying that Conway will soon have a fire company that will in the hour of her peril do her proud. The Herald? $1.00 per annum. Special Notice. Tho post ofllce authorities I show no disposition to be !j hasty in enforcing tho new law I requiring all subscriptions to 1, 1 weekly papers to be paid up to within one year.
