Tho Chairman made a strong speech urging organization* Ho?wrote a letter to Clcmson College naming the price of phospluvto rock and was referred to (1. Walter McKeiver. manager of of Virginia-Carolina Chemical Co., who replied that he would sell him a small quantity of rock at $10.50 a ton f. o. b. Mr. Lee expected to bo able to buy this rock for about $4.50 per toi . The Virginia people, as we all weli know, is the fertilizer trust. Mr. Lee went on to say that we aro responsible for our present condition and that something must be done to remedy the evil. He severe l v scored the loafers around Conway, saying there were men who had not done a day's work in a month and he did not know on what they subsisted, and suggested that thev be employed manufacturing fertilizers lor tho farmers. On motion a committee consisting of J. Lewis Lee, J. W, Ed wards and W. 11. Carter was appointed to wait tin our icgisiauve delegation with a view of trying to get a reduction on fertilizers Hon. George J. llolliday was thoroughly in smypathy with any movement that would benefit the farmer. Hon. J. A. McDermott gave an interesting talk and stated that some valuable phosphate beds on lands owned by individuals and that the State derives twenty-five cents per ton, which goes to Clemson college. Mr. Lee arose again and stated that the independent companies sold fertilizers as high as the Trust and he wanted an investigation. The next speaker was George H. Jones, candidate for the House of Representatives. Mr. Jones was surprised to kowu that Hon. J A. McDermott and Senator George J. llolliday knew so little about the fertilizer business after having had such a good opportunity. He severely criticised Hon. J. P. Durham for a mew 01 Knowledge IT sent to the legislature Mr. Jones will be familiar with the work and his efforts will bo in the interest of the ueople, lie also gavo his views on the stock law which he will let the people settle for themselves. He will bo able to give a strict account of his stewardship if elected to the Legislature. M. M. Stanley began by saying that he would not make v political speech. Will Build the Jail. The bids for building the new court house and jail were opened Tuesday by the Court House Commission and tlie contract for building the court house was awarded to Mr. H. P. Little. a local contractor for $24,1)60,40, lie being the lowest bidder. The next lowest bid was that of Mr. K. fl. Leslie. The jail contract was given to the Pawl3' Jail Co.. for $0,400 00. Work on these buildings is to begin at once, or rather as soon as the material can be placed on the grounds without unnecessary delay. The jail Is to be completed in six months and the time for the completion of the court house has not yet been lixed. News f rom Micliacl. The most interesting property that is returned is real estate, and as to this, the loard aid nothing as to the matter of equalizing the values in the counties. The assessment as lived by the couniy b mivIs were left untouched by the board with the exception ol Horry and Colleton. As to consideration of the as j sessments in Horry and Colleton, the correspondent for the News and Courier has the following to say in his paper of last Friday: "Mr Derliam, of Horry, and Mr L'riee, of Colleton, insisted that their counties wore too high, and to sat isfy all parties Mr H end ticks olTored ati amendment that the increase in Horrv would not exceed f>() nor < <m 11 and the increase in Colleton should not exceed 25 per cent. This amendment was agreed to, unci after considerable wrangling and protest the board adopted Mr Adair's resolution, accepting of the returns exactly as they have been sent in by the county auditors and leaving the assessments as they were hxed by the county boards, with the exception made for Horry and Colleton counties through the influence of Mr Derhatn and Dr Price." J. Rhuark before N. J. Cox, the case being transferred to Loris on motion of the defendant. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty after remaining out only a few minutes. The readers of the Herald will find in this issue a largo advertisement for W. Boyd Jones, who is running a suceesful store at Justice, S. C. He carries a complete line of merchandise and he oilers inducement for trade that are not offered every day. Read his advertisement and be sure to give him a call. There was a mistake in some copies of our issue of last week in one of the initials of Geo, H. Jones, candidate for the Legislature. It was Geo- L. in some of the papers, but the mistake was discovered and corrected.
