The Principal Object of the Meetiujc

Farmers Can Obtain Fertilizers
for I.ess Money ? Some of the
Candidates Made Speeches.
Pursuant to a call issued through
the public prints, tl'jllorry County
Farmers' Union met in the court
house at Conway, on Monday, AujrustGth
A. M. Duscnbury was unanimously
elected permanent Secretary.
I.U.. il.. I c i r . t i ,
ror tut; uriu'iii oi most* wiio had
not attended the previous meeting
tho ('hairman stated tl.ut tlie prime
oiij.M t of the meeting was to see if
n\ i' (*(iid i not devise some plan whereby
the farmers could get their
fertilizers for less money. Tho
Chairman made a strong speech urging
organization* Ho?wrote a letter
to Clcmson College naming the price
of phospluvto rock and was referred
to (1. Walter McKeiver. manager of
of Virginia-Carolina Chemical Co.,
who replied that he would sell him
a small quantity of rock at $10.50 a
ton f. o. b. Mr. Lee expected to bo
able to buy this rock for about $4.50
per toi . The Virginia people, as
we all weli know, is the fertilizer
trust. Mr. Lee went on to say that
we aro responsible for our present
condition and that something must
be done to remedy the evil. He severe
l v scored the loafers around Conway,
saying there were men who had
not done a day's work in a month
and he did not know on what
they subsisted, and suggested that
thev be employed manufacturing fertilizers
lor tho farmers.
On motion a committee consisting
of J. Lewis Lee, J. W, Ed wards and
W. 11. Carter was appointed to wait
tin our icgisiauve delegation with a
view of trying to get a reduction on
fertilizers
Hon. George J. llolliday was
thoroughly in smypathy with any
movement that would benefit the
farmer.
Hon. J. A. McDermott gave an interesting
talk and stated that some
valuable phosphate beds on lands
owned by individuals and that the
State derives twenty-five cents per
ton, which goes to Clemson college.
Mr. Lee arose again and stated
that the independent companies sold
fertilizers as high as the Trust and
he wanted an investigation.
The next speaker was George H.
Jones, candidate for the House of
Representatives. Mr. Jones was
surprised to kowu that Hon. J A.
McDermott and Senator George J.
llolliday knew so little about the
fertilizer business after having had
such a good opportunity. He severely
criticised Hon. J. P. Durham for
a mew 01 Knowledge IT sent to
the legislature Mr. Jones will be
familiar with the work and his
efforts will bo in the interest of the
ueople, lie also gavo his views on
the stock law which he will let the
people settle for themselves. He
will bo able to give a strict account
of his stewardship if elected to the
Legislature.
M. M. Stanley began by saying
that he would not make v political
speech. Mr. Stanley thii* Js the boy
who is giving his time to farm work
is doing more for the nation's welfare
than the town boy who spends
his tinie riding fn ap aptorpobile.
lje is a thorough farmer and his
heart is enlisted in the fight for the
farmer,
On motion the meeting adjourned
to meet again on salesday in September.

Stale Hoard of Tkpinlix.ation
met in Columbia last week for the
purpose of going over the assessments
of proportv in various counties
of the State. The most interesting
property that is returned is
real estate, and as to this, the loard
aid nothing as to the matter of
equalizing the values in the counties.
The assessment as lived by the
couniy b mivIs were left untouched
by the board with the exception ol
Horry and Colleton.
As to consideration of the as j
sessments in Horry and Colleton,
the correspondent for the News and
Courier has the following to say in
his paper of last Friday:
"Mr Derliam, of Horry, and Mr
L'riee, of Colleton, insisted that their
counties wore too high, and to sat
isfy all parties Mr H end ticks olTored
ati amendment that the increase in
Horrv would not exceed f>() nor < <m 11
and the increase in Colleton should
not exceed 25 per cent. This amendment
was agreed to, unci after considerable
wrangling and protest the
board adopted Mr Adair's resolution,
accepting of the returns exactly as
they have been sent in by the county
auditors and leaving the assessments
as they were hxed by the
county boards, with the exception
made for Horry and Colleton counties
through the influence of Mr Derhatn
and Dr Price."
It appears from this that the increase
in 1 lorry cannot exceed 50
per cent.
