Why is it that the lumber to . pa nies are the only manufacturing en terprises that arc located here? True there is one plant en^aj/ed in the manufacture of baskets and boxes for shipping fruits and vegetables, hut it has a lumber plant run in connection with it. Why not have cotton factories, furniture factories and enterprises of still other kinds at Conway? Conway owts much of her recent increase in population and taxable values to the lumber companies. It is well known that the lumber companies may succeed after awhile in sawing up all the timber the county affords and may have to go out of business. It is certainly to tin4 best interest of the town to ?^et other industries in the line of manufacturim? establish ed here, for they will bring their share of populat ion and wealth to the town. One reason why there a:c so few inanufaettrrinfjfenterprises here is the fact that business men do not seem to bo interested in getting them here. The business men of a town can come together, if they will and bring about a great change in this matter at Conway. The fact is it will take money and plenty of it to do it, hut then you know Conway businessmen have this, and lack of capital should not he mentioned. Cotton factories were talked of here many years ago, but it remains still for the men with the capital tocoir.e forward and say that the thing must he done. In tho matter of the liquor question there is one thing that a prohibitionist should never do, and that is to set a bad example to others by taking strong drink himself. For a man to argue that prohibition is the best solution of the liquor problem and then show by bis own actions that he does not prohibit himself that very thing ho would have the government prohibit in others, is very inconsistent, as well as the act of a hypocrite. Yet some- of the advocates of strict prohibition are often among those who will take a drink Prohibition is a personal and individual question, and it can succeed only when each man will control his appetite and refuse himself any indulgence in the forbidden article. Horry county is behind some of the counties in agricultural development for the reason that for many years her people made a living by means of lumber and turpentine, and did not put their attention to clearing and cultivating land. Hut for some years past they have been turning their attention more and more from the forest to the farm, and hence tho great pariod of development that has taken place and continues. When you mention the matter of modern improvements at a small town like Conway, you are always mot with the answer that there is not sufticient funds com in# in with which to accomplish anything, Of course there is a lack of revenues, we know that, but there are pirns whereby revenues may be increased, and the thing to do is to increase them, Lumpking at once attained to fame when he came out as an opponent to Senator Tillman, for some Northern concern at once enquired for him stating they wanted him for the lecture platform. A man that could come out against Tillman they evidently thought must ho a great j>erson and a man with enough cheek to face an audience on any question Cotton as a money crop, in the past, has boon very treachrous as to prices. Yet the farmers seem to have the old confidence they felt in it restored. News from Tloyds.
