THURSDAY, MAY 16 1Q01 The time that is wasted and thrown away by mankind, if turned into work, would support one half of the human race. The dullest season of the year is about over. Turpentine is beginning to come in and it will not be long before the tobacco season will open. It must be a mistaken idea to suppose that a man has more sense than he uses, because a man of much sense must of necessity, have enough to know how to use it. This week, so far, has been rather dull. T1 o conference people were with us 1 ;t week and the dis appearance of vo many strange people on ourstivets makes u striking change. The growth of truck farming in this section of the county along the railroad has been wonderful durinu the last year or two, and the next few years will bring still more wonderful results. "The soundness of Senator Mc Laurin's democracy may be measured by noting that it is receiving plaudits of the men who have opposed democratic principles all their lives."?The Commoner. Next year i> election year again and the campaign is likely to be as interesting as that of last year. McLaurin's race for re-election will be interesting. It is not settled as to who his opponents will be. He may have one from very close home That was a sensible suggestion made by Gen. E. W. Moisc to the farmers here on last Salesday in the course of his speech on the exposi tion to the effect that they live at home and board at the same place just as much as possible. If heeded it will make our farmers prosperous and independent of the whole world Ik such a thin^ can be done, the railroad should be moved out of Main Street before always. The trains with their smoke and racket often disturb the most solemn legal proceedings in the court room, and what is worse, disturb reiigious congregations in their devotions at one of our principal churches, the smoke from t. the engines ruins the paint on our . buildingsalong the principal street1 4 v. .. v % ami show windows cannot be kept clean. Ml this because the railroad, was not, in the beginning, forced to come in sonic other way. Move it away from Main Street or move Main Street to some other. ________?????? A Child Dies Sutldenlv l:r?m Drinking Whiskey. Nouton, S. C , May 13th ?The little son of John C. Rogers found a bottle of whiskey that had been left carelessly and drank too much lie was taken with convulsions and died in abont 21 hours. The child was about three years and six months old. Farmers are done plant ing except Mr Jl. II. liuilkin, who is planting} his low lands this week. E. & P. | liucksport Items. Mr. L. M. Robertson delivered an entertaining sermon to an attentive congregation here last Thursday evening. Misses Florence and Lillie Sarvis paid friends a pleasant visit here one day last week. Mr. 11aitie Dixon of Mariow. was here Sunday. Crops in our section are generally in good condition. Fairly a'good stand of corn from the lirst planting. The cold in April caused lata planting of cotton and most farmers have a very good stand by waiting for warmer weather. Mki s Patiua. Items from Murrels Inlet. Spring lias at last opened and the few warm days are bringing crops I up very nicely. The rice crop has been very much damaged from the freshet. Somejof the planters were beginning to feel a little blue as the fields were Hooded for over a month. Capt. Frank Lachieotle with his wife and daughter of Waverly Milis. spent Sunday on the Creek. Miss Genevieve Beaty is attending the parade in Georgetown. Rev, CI. \Y. Gatiin attended the District Conference in Conway last week. Messrs. General green is marching in bis force and we are preparing to meet him on the open ground with plow and hoe In passing Jacks Look Out color> ed church the other day one of the , brethren was ringing the bell with rope in one hand and a dispensary bottle in the other. Would be glad to hear from frierd Holmes of Texas, Podoe. IJnyboro. We have had showers of rain ev" > ery night for three nights. It is making cotton come up nicely. There are poor stands of corn in this section generally. Mr. IV II. Sasscr shipped four crates of English Peas from this depot on the 8th inst, They are the first that we have seen or hoard of. When they were put on the car, Capt. Slocumb was asked how long the truckers had been shipping from Chadbourn. His answer was that Mr Sasscr's were the first that he had seen. How do you think this will strike the Chadbourn Truckers? We can raise vegetables here three weeks earlier than they can at , Chadbourn, but we cannot ship them IAJ UI1JT UUVUIIUI^U OH UCUUMIll C)I 1,110 express charges. It is an outrage. I wonder why our R. U. Commissioners don't say something about such charges. They are great talkers. They can talk nicely to boys when they want us to vote for them, now wo want them to do something about this express business if it is their business. Everything is getting along nice ly in this neighborhood since the showers began to come. Some of the boys don't want to work the road and are kicking a little. They are all safe as our Magistrate will not issue a warrant for anything. Silas. rougm Tor nis lire. ' My father and sister both died of Consumption," writes J. T. No deaths or marriages to report from this section, but 200 or more wish to get married?boys of course. The farmers are almost blue over the bad stands of cotton. 111 reply to Mr. J. N. .! will say that he can go fishing and supply Booth, so we can have a fish fry soon. The correspondent from Booth wants to know how the melon man is gcttin along. The melon man seems to be in good heart and says he can soon furnish Booth with all they want when they get ub'e to buy. Sir. 1). M. Martin of Blanche made a short visit here Sunday. Mr. II. W. Mishoo's family drove over to Cool Spring Thursday to attend the wedding of Mr. K. L. Mibhoc. We have preaching at New Light church 011 each first Sunday night and Saturday night before by Rev. Mr. Barnes. BI'.mhuc. Some of our farmers are battleing with young Gen Green. Gardens are looking fine around here. Mr. P II. Sasser has shipped 7 or 8 baskets of beans. He is in the lead with beans and the melon man at Gurley will, without a doubt, be in iho lead with watermelons. His vines are looking line Mr. J. N. B. has resigned his position with the A. C. Tf his predlo'ion proves true and a new business enterprise captivates .all customers from Curie v, and the merchants have to resort to fishing, J. N. J. should feel i complimented, as this will open up anew business nothing less than fishing and will be an opening for lazy folks in carrying the bait can around. Remember, it requires energy and brain to catch fish as well as to meet eompetiton in business. Everybody knows that 1 am no merchant and don't want to be as bad as some one 1 know of. Some of our folks went to Poplar i to preaching last Sunday. Mr. J. M. Mishoe of Blanche, was on our streets last Monday attending to business. 1. 12. 13. Shudders At Mis Past.
