All are cordially invited. Mr. .1. A. Lewis, Auditor, is meeting the Treasurer's appointments with Mr. Long, lie carries his duplicate tax book to facilite collections and obviate any chances of error or irregularity. There are stray rumors of a party to be somewhere tomorrow night. Young people take notice! They whisper there may be a fiddler, and ?and so forth. Can anyone givo louder warning? The Steamer ]*l?nter will make only one tripper week from (leorgetown to Charleston for the next one month, leaving Georgetown every Monday morning. Parties ordering goods to be shipped that way can govern themselves accordingly. Wo received too late for publication this week some letters from Mr. J. P. Dcrhum about the next meeting of the Waceamaw Baptist Association. The meeting of this Association. will be held at Honey Camp Church instead of Kden. The time is not changed. "Quite dull this week." ?"Yes, there is a strong reaction, I am think ing, against the unaccustomed bus. tie of court-week. And besides the exciting news of the terrible storm loaves our gentle people in a rather more sauntering state of dullness than usual." There arc needy people upon our coast?people who lost their all in the storm of the 13th. There's no work for them to do; and they must eat. Those who are feeding them? most of them, certainly?have not the food to last themselves and their friends till next season. It is sad indeed to see the ruins of summer houses that strew the coast; but sadder far to soo weary, sorrowful, almost despairing faces weeping over the bare spot where once was home. Send them help. At the regular meeting of the Young Men's Literary League last Friday night was discussed the question, "Ought Conway be incorporated." Our young men show themselves quite bold to agitate even among themselves this tabooed question. Not only bold but quite radical ni*4 premature, in presuming to decide it in the affirmative. Of course it is quite impractical and utterly impossible; but young men of this day aro given to high-flown theorizing. In excuse for such conduct one of them says that they certainly do not menu to horrify the practicality of their seniors by preaching such heritical doctrines on the street. Let them alone; they i mean no harm; they certainly can! do nothing, Personal, Mr. Hen Dusenbury is in Sumter visiting for a day or two his wife's relatives. Tie and his family will return on tomorrow. M. J. A. Gains, of HucUsville, passed through town yesterday on his way to Marion. Mr. W. IT. Howell is visiting Marion. Court Proceeding*. In the proceedings published last week a great mistake appears in the case of the State against Kbenezor Hoggins and Jane Hoggins for ad ministering poison. Subscribers who do not give express notice to the contrary are considered as wishing to continue their subscription. If subscribers order the discontinuance of their periodicals, the publisher may continue to send them until all arrearages are paid. The courts have decided that re fusing to take periodicals from the oflico or removing or leaving them uncalled for, is prima facie evidence of intentional fraud. Any person who receives a news 1 ^ 1 D ituu iHindus use or 10 wneuier ho has ordered it or not is held by tho law a subscriber. Tho following aro laws laid down by the United States government for protection of newspapers: If subscribers move to other places without informing the publishers, and the papers are sent to the former direction, they aie hold responsible. If subscribers neglect or refuse to take their periodicals from the office to which they are directed, they are responsible until they settle their hills and order them discontinued. If subscribersjpay in advance they are bound to give notice to the publisher at the end of their time, if they do not continue taking it, otherwise tho subscriber will he responsible until an express notice, with payment of arrears, is sent to the publisher. Publishers of newspapers, can under law, arrest any man for fraud who takes a paper and refuses to pay for it. Editor Horry IIkrali>;?According to previous arrangement, the Willow Branch Literary Society met the Toddvillo Literary Society in a match debate on the 19th inst. The query for decision was, "Is it right to inllict capital punishment on circumstantial evidence?" The I Willow Branch delegation insisted, before the debate began, that it must be admitted that it is right to inllict j capital punishment on direct evidence. This caused some confusion at first; but the matter was settled and the contest began. Willow Branch first took the floor in the affirmative. The speaker's argument was the relation of a lengthy case involving circumstantial evidence, in which case the supposed murderer was a colored man. The chain of evidence was well connected, but the speaker failed to show that it was right to inflict capital punishment on the supposed murderei. The two other speakers for the Willow Branch Club made long speeches, but said little on the quory. Messrs. II. II. Woodward, W. T. Armstrong, and I. J. Cox, of the Toddville Society made strong arguments directly on their side of the question, and the judges were ob1! .1 i - 1 1 < i ?" ngen 10 ueciue in uio negative. The audience was well entertained. Mr. W. T. Armstrong, who has been running a saw at the mill of Mr. II. I,. Buck, has left to take charge of a mill at Hanford, S. 0. Occasional. The bodies of ten or eleven of those who were drowned on Magnolia Beach have been recovered, and search is still being made for the rest. j % Mr. \V. McO.
