I 89& THt STORM OF 1822- | > Much Greater Loss of life than in the Recent Hurricane Great Destruction of PropertyIt was remarked to tlie IIkuald correspondent while on Murrell's Inlet las* week that there was no re ; cord of the^reat storm of 18'22 in existence. Many tales and legends' of the "MioTornado" still live in the folk lore of the down tho Neck uvkiuco) ouiuvj *>i iik'iii iiiobi icrnuc stories. In the N< >''x <iml 1'ouricr \ of Suturday lust, are copied extracts from the old Charleston Courier, descriptive of tho great storm. We copy it as of historical ami si/nq*"the tic interest to our readers. The weather had he mi for a week or ten days, very unpleasant, the wind blowing ooassionally fresh from east to southeast) but there appeared of those indications which usually preceedc a hurricane. I let ween It) and 12 o'clock on tne nmht of IT i_ n day, September 27, we had a squall from the northeast, and about 12 another more violent squall from tho cast and then from tho southeast, when it blow with FUIOIITI'UI. VI01.KNCH. Most of the injury caused by the wind must have occurred about 2 o'clock in the morning and while it blow from this quarter. As the time of high water had boon about 7 o'clock in tho evening, the inhubi tants apprehended no danger from the tide, as from the violence of tho gale it was presumed that it could not continue till the period of the succeeding high water, but the tide could have ebbed very little if at all. When the waters returned with irresisuoic violence and between J nn<] 4 o'clock in tho morning had reached a height far exceeding that in the great gale of 1801, a very small portion indeed of tho inhabited part of the island remained above the ocean. Tho gale began' to subside, wo believe, about half after 3 o'clock, the wind blowing then from southwest. It was oppressively warm during the gale and many of those luminous bodies or meteors, unusual in <>ur fall gales, passed near tho surface of the earth. The old time Reporter then gives a list of tho sufferers, with amazing particularity in some unimportant details and an ontiie omission of some most essential facts. His account is interspersed with many pious ejaculations on the vanity of human calculations and tho dispensations of Providence. I .OSES OK I'ROPKKTY. Tho following suffered tho loss of out buildings, with tnoro or less damage to their residences, sited rooms and piazzas: Dr. h'ord, Dr. Allston, (J. W. Ileriot, the Rev. G. Capers, Robert Uoriot, I J. B. Trap ier, tho Rev. M. 11. Lance, Mrs. JO. Meyers, It. A. Taylor, T. F. Goddard 1. Solomon, A. Maryiu, 1'. Cuttino, Mrs. Henry, the ltev. .1. S. v'apers. Coggeshall, John l'orter, Jr. The heaviest losses of life arc thus reported: The dwelling house of Mr. 11. F. Withers, a very lnrgo new building, and every outbuilding destroyed, and not a vestige remain ing. There were in tins house eighteen persons, of whom four have been most miraculously saved. Those saved are Mr. lb F. Withers and three negroes, those lost are Mrs. Withers, her four unliable daughters, her son, Mr. Withers Schackelford, nephew of Mr. Withers, Mr. Wish and five nogroeH. Mr. Withers, about daylight, whs hoRid calling for help in Duhourndien's Creek (near the ocean,) a litte above the settlement on that island, and was rescued by Lieut. Levy, of the United States navy. It appears that he had clung to a piece of timber. if - - - - .Mr. withers, who had long been in ft very bad state of health, finding himself chilled and exhausted called to one of his negro men, who was j endeavoring to gain Hie timber but whom he did not know, to secure himself on it, as ho was about to relinquish it through inability to, contend any longer. At this mom-j rnont heard, the voice of his little son, of 12 or 13 years of ago, of whoso presence he was before ignorant, cheering him and entreating him toperaervc in his exertions, and assuring his father that he believed ***;- he himself would be able to retain his gmsp of the timber till it should on shored this instantly restored to tin father animation and strength, hut in a few j minutes after an overwhelming surge 1 separated them fore\er i,i this world. , The negro was afterwards taken up 1 alive in the marsh opposite to that , island. A negro hoy of Mr. Withers 1 was driven across to Duboudicn's ; Island on a pair of steps, landed and took refuge in a house which was shortly after Mown down, he sur- , vivos uninjured Moses Fort had every outbuilding destroyed; the dwelling house thrown from its foundation, scattered and removed some distencc, the piazza and sheds blown away. In this house there were fivo deaths, Mrs. Hannah Holsford, relict of the late Kdmund Kotsford, Miss Se t', tho daughter of David Scott, and three servants. Dr. I.. Myers had every building torn to pieces by the sea and every vestige of theni destroyed, and this respoctablo and worthy man, with every member of his amiable family, drowned. In this louse fifteen lives wore lost, to wit: Dr. Myers, Mrs Myers, three daughters and a son and nine servants. Mrs Narzedas had every building destroyed. The family look refuge in the house of Mr. Moses h'orl, where three of them afterwards I 'St j their lives, a w hite child and two j servants. A De Rosa had his bail (ding destroyed and carried away by i the water, and this benevolent, in dnstrious and honest man and a I negro lad, the only inhabitants, are both lost. The buildings tit the south end of North Island are much injured, but no lives have been lost. At Dtibour dicn's Island the havoc has been less,' I but liianv holm-ops have linen d:mvn - J O - <?<1 itik 1 crushed by the falling build ings, ami wo understand Unit Mr. William A. Alston has lost on that I island eleven negroes. The violence of the gale in this | town was greater than any that has occurred, we have eeason to believe, since the year 1752. The town ex hi bits one general scene of ruin and devastation, buildings blown down, lotlmrs unroofed, chimneys, fences land trees lying prostrate in every direction. Several negroes have lost their lives, but. we have heard of no white person being injured. ? <; tiurnn Iced Cure.
