The Baptists of the f^outh are to gather in Atlanta early in May. There will be a great gathering ot eliuich men, too, when 1 he Southern Baptist A.*>ooiation meets there at its next session. Nearly 2,000 delegates, ministers and leadine Baptists from all parts of the Southern State, will beon hand to atteud, as every State will have many representatives. It is to be the greatest ctonvtfntion of the kind ever held in that city befoie. There is interest already awakening m tfn$ convention in Georgi.-t, aud eveiy Baptist wants to know waat is going ro be done by the session and what Atlanta is going to do m the matter of entertaining the numbers of delegates coming. We do not believe the opposition, no matter what its numerical strength nan beat Tillman for the simple rea son tifat they are diyided amongst themselves There are at lejisf two factions in the ranks ef the opposition, the Haskelites and the anti Hsskelites The great mass of the Democratic party 'will be slow to give their votes to *uy bolter. Tinman is a bitter pill to many of our people# but it is the patriotic duty of every good citizen to maintain the integrity of the party in South Carolina. Ninety-Six, Feb. 21: The people of (JCnappell’s are very much alarmed at the sudden and strange disappear nuce of Mr. John Wadkms a well-to- do and vsry highly respected farmer of that section. It is, said t hat about two weeks ago he took hi* sou up stairs and asked him to name a poison tlrat^would kill a man the quickest. The son was very much surprised at this request and replied that ho did not kuow. Nothing was thought of this until last Friday, when he kissed his wife good-bye, telling her that he was goirg to walk down town, and would return some time during the day. Failing to do this theJamily became alauned, and search was immediate ly made for him, but up to date uoth mg has Deen heard of him. He was seen on the day lie left going through George T. RfiJ’s plantation, in the direction of the river, and it is teared that he has committed suicide. Sftvanali, Ga., Feb. 23.—A frightful storv has been brought to thi’ city by a geutleinan arriving todaay. In the vicinity of A'odoe, 8. C., ou the Port Royal rail road, a'white woman, whose name is not given, gave birth to a mu latto child. The neighbors were in dignan‘, aud feeUng that s-be ha<l dis graced the community, demanded of her the name of the father of the ehild. The woman gave the names of three negroes, and many men were soon on their traek. One of the negroes is known to have been lynched, another is said to have b. en taken into custody and his fate is unknown, ani the other is at large and has signified his intention of dying with’his boots on.
