The Editor of flu* paper is a Oroyer
Cleveland man tnd if its influence is
worth anything' at all it wilZ so to the
support of tli&t great statesman who
expresses his conyietions in the face of
success of defeat. That was wh it de
feated before because of his honest
Conviction to what he believed was
right, fifurrah for Cleveland! Bind

and prices have declined to a point
which is genera!ly considered unre
mnnerative, some people seem to
think that the bottom is going to drop
out of th6 South, when in point of
fact, it may be a posi'ive benefit te
them. It wiH doubt!ess lead to a fur

study of economies/ prtxlnction of her

make cotton for cost from this t/tt©
forward, she would still have greater
elements of prosperity as the result
of reasonable effort fbim* any other

The Baptists of the f^outh are to
gather in Atlanta early in May. There
will be a great gathering ot eliuich
men, too, when 1 he Southern Baptist
A.*>ooiation meets there at its next
session.
Nearly 2,000 delegates, ministers
and leadine Baptists from all parts of
the Southern State, will beon hand
to atteud, as every State will have
many representatives. It is to be the
greatest ctonvtfntion of the kind ever
held in that city befoie.
There is interest already awakening
m tfn$ convention in Georgi.-t, aud
eveiy Baptist wants to know waat is
going ro be done by the session and
what Atlanta is going to do m the
matter of entertaining the numbers of
delegates coming.
The eu.ertainment will becomplete,
of course, since Atlanta is already
knowttastbe most hospitable ot the
n any hospitable cities of the South.
There is a committee already appoint

all tue preparations necessary in ad

HERE’S A POLITICAL SCHEME.
Ea weyDe roocrat
Mr. Editor : Please allow me to say
in the columns of y oor paper that
there will be a mass meeting of repub
licana in Central on Wednesday next,
and would be glad if both democrats
and republicans won/d unite their
strength in the county of Pickens*

will be all together* as you are in pow

riie'republicans of South Carolina
should and wi/1 unite their ’ strength
as of one great State. Please explain
to us so that we can help to elect a
governor and other officers of the
State. I voted for colonel Haskell,
and rf ueed wifi vote again, and as I
voted o«iee for^a democrat, you know

l THE POLITICAL SITUATION.
PifeSs a u Banner.
At present Wb believe there is con
aider .We disaffection from the Tillman
ranks, but we do not believe that
Tillman can be beaten.
We do not believe the opposition,
no matter what its numerical strength
nan beat Tillman for the simple rea
son tifat they are diyided amongst
themselves There are at lejisf two
factions in the ranks ef the opposition,
the Haskelites and the anti Hsskelites
The great mass of the Democratic
party 'will be slow to give their votes
to *uy bolter.
Tinman is a bitter pill to many of
our people# but it is the patriotic duty
of every good citizen to maintain
the integrity of the party in South
Carolina.
We believe in a rule by tho people,
afld iff* majority of the Democratic
pa?tjr nkmea Candidate, then it is.our
duty to support him- We have nothing
togkia by going back on our neigh
bors and friends. We have everything
to loss by quitting the company o
our kindred and the tren of our own
ra'eft. -We have a right to beRt Tillman
if we can, but we are in honor bound
to stick to the noroifhation after- it is
made.
At present the opposition to Tillman
carfi not harmonize. The newspapers
ean not go on the sam# plat farm, and

WHERE IS JOHN WADKINS ?
Ninety-Six, Feb. 21: The people of
(JCnappell’s are very much alarmed at
the sudden and strange disappear
nuce of Mr. John Wadkms a well-to-
do and vsry highly respected farmer
of that section. It is, said t hat about
two weeks ago he took hi* sou up
stairs and asked him to name a poison
tlrat^would kill a man the quickest.
The son was very much surprised at
this request and replied that ho did
not kuow. Nothing was thought of
this until last Friday, when he kissed
his wife good-bye, telling her that he
was goirg to walk down town, and
would return some time during the
day.
Failing to do this theJamily became
alauned, and search was immediate
ly made for him, but up to date uoth
mg has Deen heard of him. He was
seen on the day lie left going through
George T. RfiJ’s plantation, in the
direction of the river, and it is teared
that he has committed suicide. Be
fore he left it is said that ha locked up
his money and papers, and turned the
ke}* over to his wife. No veason can
be assigued for hie strange disappear
anco except that lie was a large plan
ter, aud that all his hands have eini
grated to Arkansas.
HORRIBLE AFFAIR IN EDGE-
FIELD.
Sftvanali, Ga., Feb. 23.—A frightful
storv has been brought to thi’ city by
a geutleinan arriving todaay. In the
vicinity of A'odoe, 8. C., ou the Port
Royal rail road, a'white woman, whose
name is not given, gave birth to a mu
latto child. The neighbors were in
dignan‘, aud feeUng that s-be ha<l dis
graced the community, demanded of
her the name of the father of the
ehild.
The woman gave the names of three
negroes, and many men were soon on
their traek.
One of the negroes is known to have
been lynched, another is said to have
b. en taken into custody and his fate
is unknown, ani the other is at large
and has signified his intention of dying
with’his boots on. The community is
;rro^»tf. Nothing more than thebaic
statement as given above can be ob
taided tonight.
“If you have $10 to spend,” said
Baruum, “spend one for the article

when it came to advertising. Barnum
said to me some 3*ears ago: “I can

the only man I’m afraid of. I want
