\ V i . i <*1 ,.X.>.ii 0 Hampton. \Jarrh lo.--One of tho disastrous fires tn the history of the town occurred in VarnviHe at an early hour this niornin*. when practically all the business houses cm both ntdefl - cf->frahr street -wer+*+- destroyed, entailing an estimated loss of between sixty and seventy- five thousand dollars, partly covered by insurance. The fire originated in a lot sepa rating the stores of (\ W. Taylor and W. O. Guess. A number of banana cartons and a quantity of eiielsior had been piled up on this vacant lot, >ind it is supposed that so-seone passing carelessly threw a lighted cigarette on this pile of re- fiiF*-./igniting it. Had Gained Much Headway. /The- fire was discovered by the /nUht watchman shortly after mid nit nt, and it bud the n reached the st e of VV. Taylor. -This he- Inc a wooden building the flames sp **ad rapidly, destroying the ad- jftining store, that of J*'.„G. Good int, in short order.- and spreading thence both directions, crossing th* street and burning the large store of L. K. Dowling & Sons. Th»• n the fire swept down both streets at the same time. Only by he»oic efforts were the Charleston A- Western Carolina Railway station, the residence of W'. K. Dowling and the only two store s on the entire street left standing, saved. The tire 'v,:- gotten under control about 2: la a.' Jke I.. I.ightsy was seriously in- jii ed when a part of the burning building of <1. \V . Gooding fell tip- on him.
