The chain gang is now at work on the new road to Hunter's Chapel, and it will soon be open for travel all the way. < Better buy that organ now. They are going fast. T. Black, Bamberg, S. C. There was a good crowd in town last |. Monday from all sections of the county, attending the county campaign meeting. ? Municipal politics has already begun to create some interest, although the city election is not to be held until next |>v, spring. Mr. Wm. R. Fishbume, of Columbia, a boy who was born and reared in this county, is a candidate for the legislature - in Richland county. . There will be preaching at the Methodist church next Sunday morning as usual. Rev. M. W. Hook will be present himself or send a minister. If Mayfield's friends support him as strongly as they should he will undoubtedly be nominated for congress in the first ? primary. So, turn out and vote, and see that your neighbor does likewise. We are here to serve you promptly and in a satisfactory manner. In fact, there has not been a day since the first of January that our job hook was clear of work, and naturally we are proud of the record. Mr. H. Spann Dowling, who has been opposing Dr. J. B. Black for the Senate in Bamberg county, has withdrawn from the race and Dr. Black now has the field to himself. Dr. Black has served the people of his county faithfully and well for a number of years in the lower house and is the logical candidate for the place. He merits the promotion and we hope he will be elected by the unanimous vote of the county.?Walterboro Press and i Standard. 1 . ... ' ' . .'1 ' ..v ' TREASURER FREES SHORTAGE. The new ad. of the Chick Springs Co. is on another page. This resort is n.?w the most popular place in South Carolina, the hotel being crowded by the best people from all over the South. The hotel is new and the fare and service is of the best, while the water is certainly beneficial. Those suffering from liver or kidney trouble should go to Chick Springs and drink the water, and if one is in search of pleasure it can also be found there. Mayfleld is Sure to Win. The Mirror, a labor paper published for the textile workers of the Horse Creek Valley, in Aiken county, and edited by John Allen Mette, an Edgefield county man, has the following to say of Hon. S. G. Mayfield's candidacy for congress: Hon. 8. G. Mayfield is the logical candidate for congress in the second district of- South Carolina. Every man who voted for Theodore G. Croft is under obligations to vote for Senator Mayfield, because he gracefully withdrew from the race for the short term in favor of the son of Aiken county's foremost but lamented citizen. Senator Mayfield, who is honest, able and honorable, is entitled to the Domination from everv consideration of justice and fairness. The world is ruled by sentiment, and it was a noble sentiment that prompted Senator Mayfield to bow submissively to the expressed will of the people of the second district, who now have it in their power to reward true merit by giving their support to Bamberg's gifted son. The lower part of the district is entitled to the representative at this time, and Edgefield, Saluda and Aiken will not hesitate to bestow honor where honor is d'-e. Giv your loyal support to 'Senator Mayfield, the working man's friend. New Sinister Arrives. Beaufort, July 31.?Rev. and Mrs. M. L. La wson and young son, from Bamberg^ arrived to-night and are guests at the Beaufort house. Mr. Lawson recently made a very favorable impression upon the congregation of the Baptist church, which resulted in his being called to accept the vacant pastoirate. He will occupy the handsome parsonage of that church in a few days. The presence of this able preacher and his family is much appreciated here. To Rest.?The store now occupied by H. C. Folk. Apply to S. W. Johnson, Bamberg, S. C. "We send out this week as a supplement the platform of Hon. L. J. Williams as a candidate for congress. The growth of Bamberg is well attested by the fact that all the carpenters and bricklayers here are kept busy all the time. They don't have to go away from home to hunt work. The attention of city council is directed to the drain on Kaiiroad' avenue in iront of our house. During and after a heavy rain the sidewalk is flooded for a considerable distance, and pedestrians have to take the middle of the street. This year bids fair to be one of the most prosperous in the history of Bamberg. Every enterprise and business is I doing well, and we have had do failures. , We know of no town in South Carolina ' which is on a more solid foundation than Bamberg. A fine flow was struck at the new artesian well for the town last week, the flow being about one hundred gallons a min- ' ute. It only held for a few days, however, and work has begun on it again. The well is to be bored deeper, and the work will go on until a flow is. struck which will hold. The Misses Gale, of Baltimore, Md., ( will shortly open a millinery business in J Bamberg. These ladies are now in the millinery department of the establishment of Armstrong, Cater & Co., Baltimore, and have chosen our town in which ] to eDgage in business on account of its superior business advantages. rinr npw ir?h nr#??5 will be in this week. I and we will be better prepared than ever to turn out fine job work. Twe old presses have been shipped off, and they will be replaced with a larger machine, new and up-to-date. Last week we received the largest shipment of paper ever received by any job printing house in this section, and w"e can satisfy the wants of all, no matter what they may be. Negro Man Killed by Train. North, Aug. 2.?An unknown mulatto s negro was struck by northbound freight I No. 4 on the Seaboard Air Line railway yesterday afternoon about 3.30 o'clock j aud instantly killed. The dead man was about 40 years of age and is thought by a resident witness 1 to be named Jesse Williams, which name however, is faintly recalled. From the coroner's inquest, held by Magistrate W. A. Johnson, it seems that the negro got 1 off of yesterday's mid-day passenger train 1 and was considerably under the influence I of whiskey. After lounging around the depot awhile he went off down the railroad and was seated on the north end of North Edisto trestle about two miles south of this place where he met his death as ? stated. Evidently he was drunk or asleep or both. .
