She sub mitted quietly to arrest and expressed her willingness to go to Barnwell, hut required the deputy marshal, Myers, to furnish her with a conveyance. This he refused to do and proceeded to hand- cnlT her to her son and at five o’clock In the afternoon started them otf afoot to Barnwell, a distance of 1H miles. Mrs. Soniig protested her inability to w alk all that distaime, hut was forced to make tlie attempt, Myers and Owens riding together in a buggy just before the prisoners. About a utile this side of Grahams they were overtaken hy Mr. S. T. Inab- nett, w ho followed them in hi.^btjggy and furnished conveyance to Mrs. Hott- tag to Barnwell. Fpon arriving at the county scat s|ie was thrown in jail where sfje spent the night witjmtn fisxi. Next nioniing she was taken by rail road to Aiken and after an examination before CommiasioMcr Morgan bound over for trial by theJTtilted States Oourt. She gave bond readily for her appear ance. Mrs. Sontag is quite an old lady, being aliout sixty years of age and not iu robust health. There was dq use for haste in'arresting and hurrying her to Barnwell as there was no likelihood of her running away. She has property at Grahknis and had been previously arrested and bound over Irefore Mr. H. M. Myers, before his resignation of the office of ('omtnisidoiier, on one of the charges embraced iu the last executed warrant. There was no propriety in carrying Mrs. Sontag to Barn well, for it wan a well known fact that the office of United Sutes Commissioner had been vacant since Mr. ii. M. Myers had made hlkYealguatioo.
