for and to whom 1 shall ever feel in
debted. If New Barnwell is composed
of snrh citizen* as it was toy fortune to
mingle with »be ought to boom. While
there I prospected the place and war
amazed at the unmistakable sign* of
improvement. In other days, when a
school boy, where 1 manird and sported
on fields and vaednt lots are now decked
with many new and some very hand
some residences, adorned with licaiitiful
yards, lawns and parks, and hi the
linsltiess part of the town I was struck
w lib both large wood and brick stores
and some very pretty law- offices, occu
pied by young and middle aged men
versed in the law, and a good crop of
M. D’s. I also found two printing ofh-
ces miming good weekly papers. Yet
the grandest outlouk of iMununent im
provement was the Graded School,
which is so aasential to fierraanent suc-
ceas: again, 1 found the people organ
ized ana erecting a bank.

On last Friday morning Him Weimers,
»f Aiken county. caught in the Edisto
swamp near Gnignard’s landing two

carried the young bruins awav.

weights. Ignorant pf the morning’s oc
currences, pitched thnlr camp within
tifty yards of the bear* despoiled home
and prepared themselves for a peaceful

bear came home and fonnd that her
children had hewn carried away. And
she made It right lively for the fisher

were kept by their size from climbing

weeks ago by D. E. Mver*. Deputy
I nlted >tate* Marshal. Mr. Kelli re
ceived his Infot iiialion from the defend
ants and from the jiapern in the cause
jtFuduced at the preiintiiuiry hearing.
At the time irterml to Myers acoum-
panied by James II. Owens went to
Gtahams to arrest Mr*. Sontag and Iter
son uftoua warrant issued hy Cora mis
sions t Morgan, of Aiken, for sclliirg li
quor without lieens**. It is i»ttn»er to
say just here that Owens took no part
iu tin-arrest. Mis.' Sontag wu* found
in l*od sick at her residence. She sub
mitted quietly to arrest and expressed
her willingness to go to Barnwell, hut
required the deputy marshal, Myers, to
furnish her with a conveyance. This
he refused to do and proceeded to hand-
cnlT her to her son and at five o’clock In
the afternoon started them otf afoot to
Barnwell, a distance of 1H miles. Mrs.
Soniig protested her inability to w alk
all that distaime, hut was forced to
make tlie attempt, Myers and Owens
riding together in a buggy just before
the prisoners.
About a utile this side of Grahams
they were overtaken hy Mr. S. T. Inab-
nett, w ho followed them in hi.^btjggy
and furnished conveyance to Mrs. Hott-
tag to Barnwell. Fpon arriving at the
county scat s|ie was thrown in jail
where sfje spent the night witjmtn fisxi.
Next nioniing she was taken by rail
road to Aiken and after an examination
before CommiasioMcr Morgan bound
over for trial by theJTtilted States Oourt.
She gave bond readily for her appear
ance. Mrs. Sontag is quite an old lady,
being aliout sixty years of age and not
iu robust health. There was dq use for
haste in'arresting and hurrying her to
Barnwell as there was no likelihood of
her running away. She has property
at Grahknis and had been previously
arrested and bound over Irefore Mr. H.
M. Myers, before his resignation of the
office of ('omtnisidoiier, on one of the
charges embraced iu the last executed
warrant. There was no propriety in
carrying Mrs. Sontag to Barn well, for
it wan a well known fact that the office
of United Sutes Commissioner had been
vacant since Mr. ii. M. Myers had made
hlkYealguatioo. That detour onlv in
creased the suffering of the accused and
the milejurt! account uf thw clrnui w uamt-
•hal. In any event, Mrs. Sonugi-ould
have been carried to Barnwe'll or to Ai
