But those with the know-how work with them without veil or glove. 1 had some t>ee demonstrations when 1 was county agent, but became allergic to their sting and had to stop. In evaluating the bee, honey is just a by-product, although a pro digious amount of work goes into its making. Some of the experts hove figured that bees have to travel twice the distance around the earth in making just one pound of honey. Each bee gathers only about a quarter of an ounce of honey a season, although she works all the daylight hours. They figure it would take a single bee about 64 years to make a pound of honey. So, folks, when you eat that de lightful sweet, remember the work- hours that went into it. The great value of the bee is aid ing in the pollenization of flowers. Many plants will not bear without their help. Apple orchardists, for in stance, melon and cucumber grow ers and others must have bees. Of ten there are not enough of the wild ones around, so they bring hives into their orchards and fields an blooming time. The widespread use of powerfu nsecticides has thinned the bee pop ulation out at places. I’m told. This is a sort of vicious circle.
