XO WAGE FIGHT > UPON IXiLITEHACY The executive committee of the South Carolln Division of the American Cotton Association, meeting recently, decided to throw the full strength of that organization Into the. fight on Illiteracy in this state. The presidents and other officers of the various county branches of the association in the state were instructed to at once lend their aid and take the lead In the campaign to have every person between the ages of 14 and 100 taught to read and write their name within the year. The matter was brought before the committee by G. D. Toole, member of the committee from the Second congressional district. Mr. Toole is also president of the Aiken county branch and stated that the Aiken county branch had already enlisted in me ngnt. tie introduced the resolution throwing the state division into the campaign. -The proposition was very warmly seconded by T. L>. Manning, J, H. Claffy, L. I. Guion, T. J. Kirven, J. C. Rivers and other members of the committee and it was unanimously decided that the association would join in the campaign at once. Following is the resolution offered by Mr. Toole and unanimously adopted by the executive committee. "Whereas, from the reading of the report of the commissioner of education of the United States, we find, to our great mortification and regret, that Soutli Carolina stands 46tli or at the bottom of the list in education, and "Whereas, this has placed us in a very bad light before the world, even putting us lower in intelligence and education than Hawaii, and "Wliereas. that state of affairs has been caused to a great extent by the negligence of the good citizens of our state in not taking up this matter earlier and arousing the citizenry of this state to our shameful predicament, therefore "Bo it resolved. That the executive committee of the South Carolina Division of the American Cotton Association hereby pledges its cooperation in every manner possible with our state authorities in malting a drive in the next few weeks to at least in part wipe out this condition of affairs. "Be it further resolved.
