XO WAGE FIGHT
> UPON IXiLITEHACY
The executive committee of the
South Carolln Division of the American
Cotton Association, meeting recently,
decided to throw the full
strength of that organization Into the.
fight on Illiteracy in this state. The
presidents and other officers of the
various county branches of the association
in the state were instructed to
at once lend their aid and take the
lead In the campaign to have every
person between the ages of 14 and
100 taught to read and write their
name within the year.
The matter was brought before the
committee by G. D. Toole, member
of the committee from the Second
congressional district. Mr. Toole is
also president of the Aiken county
branch and stated that the Aiken
county branch had already enlisted in

throwing the state division into
the campaign.
-The proposition was very warmly
seconded by T. L>. Manning, J, H.
Claffy, L. I. Guion, T. J. Kirven, J.
C. Rivers and other members of the
committee and it was unanimously decided
that the association would join
in the campaign at once.
Following is the resolution offered
by Mr. Toole and unanimously adopted
by the executive committee.

the bottom of the list in education,
and
"Whereas, this has placed us in a
very bad light before the world, even
putting us lower in intelligence and
education than Hawaii, and
"Wliereas. that state of affairs has
been caused to a great extent by the
negligence of the good citizens of our
state in not taking up this matter
earlier and arousing the citizenry of
this state to our shameful predicament,
therefore
"Bo it resolved. That the executive
committee of the South Carolina
Division of the American Cotton Association
hereby pledges its cooperation
in every manner possible with our
state authorities in malting a drive in
the next few weeks to at least in part
wipe out this condition of affairs.
"Be it further resolved. That we
